No. 215 is a unique painting by contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang. The painting is made with Indian ink and charcoal on paper mounted on canvas, dimensions are 120 × 60 cm (47.2 × 23.6 in). Dimensions of the framed artwork are 125 x 65 cm (49.2 x 25.5 in).
The artwork is signed, sold framed and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
Indian ink is still a favorite medium for Hongyu Zhang, whose paintings have roots in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. He uses it today along with various techniques to experiment with new artistic trends. He draws the portrait's outlines, colors the expansive areas, and shapes the face using shadows and lights by dipping a thick brush into various ink dilutions for various shades of grey.
It is more important for the artist to interpret and express a feeling (such as determination, introspection, or weariness) than it is to accurately portray the features of a face. This is because the artist wants to capture the intimate essence of his subject. Hongyu Zhang created fictional characters that are, in essence, self-portraits.
