About the Item
Tribute to Artists 17 is a unique painting by contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang. The painting is made with Indian ink, acrylic, charcoal, pastel and engraving on gray cardboard mounted on canvas, dimensions are 92 × 60 cm (36.2 × 23.6 in). Dimensions of the framed artwork are 97 x 65 cm (38.1 x 25.5 in).
The artwork is signed, sold framed (grey shadow box) and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
The sculptor Rodin, and particularly his sculpture "La Grande Ombre," is honored in this painting. This piece fascinates Hongyu Zhang, who uses engraving and painting — two mediums in which he excels — to reinterpret it on a two-dimensional surface.
Using contrasting mediums like pastels, China ink, charcoal, and acrylics, this figurative piece is a portrait that visually gives the still image a dynamic dimension. On the canvas composition, the artist also used linography, a photographic printing technique on textile that adds contrast by making the dark colours in the portrait stand out against a blue background.
Hongyu Zhang’s technique is part of the oldest and richest artistic heritage in the human history. The artist fuses techniques from his ancestors with acrylic, oils and pastels from the West. He works on different mediums placed directly on the floor. The expression, however, is truly from western inspiration, and the influence of engraving is obvious in his paintings.

Zhang Hongyu
Hongyu Zhang’s artworks take root in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. The line creates the fundamental unity of all his works, particularly his portraits, which have a striking expressive power. The artist draws them on different mediums placed directly on the floor, with music helping him to find the strength, rhythm and movement of each work. He creates an energetic space that attracts and captivates, inviting us to decipher the artist’s nervous writing, which seems to have been invented to understand the depths of the soul. “For me, a work is the meeting between a subject and the artist’s thoughts, his experiences. It is about giving an impression, translating a feeling... This approach is central to the aesthetic system of traditional Chinese painting: it is more about expressing a sensation than painting a reality.’’
