About the Item
Tribute to Artists 2 is a unique painting by contemporary artist Hongyu Zhang. The painting is made with India ink, acrylic, pastel and engraving on cardboard mounted on canvas, dimensions are 100 × 100 cm (39.3 × 39.3 in). Dimensions of the framed artwork are 106 x 106 x 5 cm (41.73 × 41.73 × 1.97 in). The artwork is signed, sold framed (shadow box) and comes with a certificate of authenticity.
This artwork pays tribute to the legendary singer Jim Morrison.
In this portrait, Hongyu Zhang combines his two preferred techniques—engraving and painting with ink—to produce a striking high-contrast image.
The effect is reminiscent of a strong sidelight illuminating the right side of Morrison’s face, while the left remains in shadow. Through engraving, Zhang carves into the cardboard, creating areas of white, while his ink painting—applied in varying concentrations—renders the figure with bold, expressive strokes. Accents of acrylic and pastel add subtle touches of color and emphasize specific details.
The painting is part of Zhang’s series Tribute to the Masters, in which he honors the artists who inspire him.

Zhang Hongyu
Hongyu Zhang’s artworks take root in calligraphy and traditional Chinese painting. The line creates the fundamental unity of all his works, particularly his portraits, which have a striking expressive power. The artist draws them on different mediums placed directly on the floor, with music helping him to find the strength, rhythm and movement of each work. He creates an energetic space that attracts and captivates, inviting us to decipher the artist’s nervous writing, which seems to have been invented to understand the depths of the soul. “For me, a work is the meeting between a subject and the artist’s thoughts, his experiences. It is about giving an impression, translating a feeling... This approach is central to the aesthetic system of traditional Chinese painting: it is more about expressing a sensation than painting a reality.’’
