About the Item

Acrylic on canvas, 2008. Signed and dated "R Haas 08" lower right. Image size 33 1/2 x 26 1/2" (85 x 67.3 cm). Very good condition. The Old Print Shop, Inc. represents the artist Richard Haas and this drawing comes directly from the artist. Richard Haas – Printmaker and Painter – is a well-recognized urban artist, who became famous for his illusionistic murals painted on buildings. He was born in Spring Green, Wisconsin, in 1936 and studied at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and then the University of Minnesota. He has had over seventy single artist exhibitions over his career and is in the collection of over 40 museums worldwide. Richard enrolled at Wisconsin State College (later, University of Wisconsin) in 1954 and began taking classes in architecture. During the summers of 1955 & 1956 he worked with his uncle who was the master stonemason at Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin Studio in Spring Green. Richard changed his major to art education and began making prints studying under Robert Von Neuman. In 1961 Richard went to the University of Minnesota for his MFA. He had been chosen to be Malcolm Myers’ studio assistant in printmaking at the university. He completed a series of prints and in 1962 he completed a series of Famous Heads - the basis of his first single artist exhibition. He graduated in 1964 and accepted a teaching position at Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan. In 1966-67 he created a group of three-dimensional dioramas of artists in their studios. These boxes would lead to the SoHo (Cast-Iron District) street dioramas of the early 1970’s. A departure from his earlier work to urban-based images. His first building façade was the Haughwout Building, a drypoint in 1970. His interest in buildings and the architecture of the city became his backdrop for his art. Because of his interest in the city and his three-dimensional dioramas, he began using trompe l’oeil techniques in the 1970’s. His first interior mural was painted in his studio in 1974-75, showing a formal room in an industrial loft. In 1975 he completed his first exterior mural on 112 Prince Street carrying the style of the building’s façade around the entire building. He has since done exterior and interior mural projects all across the United States.

Frank Benson made this drypoint in 1928. The second state of two. A scarce print with no recorded printings of the second state - presumably, at least two were printed. The image size is 4 7/8 x 5 7/8" (12.4 x 14.9 cm). #282 in the Frank W. Benson catalogue raisonne by Adam Paff. Frank Weston Benson (1862-1951), well known for his American impressionist paintings, produced an incredible body of prints - etchings, drypoints, and a few lithographs.
