About the Item

Ronald Davis (b.1937) is an American abstract artist best known for his multi-dimensional geometric creations. Born in California, Davis' work embodies the West Coast aesthetic and spirit of using innovative techniques and materials. As a young painter in the early 60's, Davis was strongly influenced by hard-edge geometric abstraction and Op Art. His works typically feature a three-dimensional geometric shape completed in hard-edge style with bright, bold color blocking. Inspired by the use of linear perspective born during the Renaissance, Davis imbues his forms with the illusion of space. One of his signature approaches offers the viewer to look down into the "inside" of a shape. During the time Davis was working as an artist in California, the"Light & Space" movement was blossoming on the West Coast. Like many of his contemporaries in Los Angeles in the 1960's and 70's Davis' practice embraced new materials and techniques. Acrylic paint or resin reinforced with fibreglass became two of his lifelong material signatures. His innovative choice of material helped amplify the illusionary/Op Art qualities of his work. Unquestionably Davis' aesthetic contains key elements of this movement, otherwise known as "California minimalism". "Truncate" from 1967 is a paradigm of both the era and Davis' aesthetic. The viewer is presented a hard-edge geometric shape with the inside of the shape visible. The bold, acrylic painted color blocking emphasizes Davis' precise lines and linear perspective. His most iconic perspective is utilized here with the shapes top, inside, and sides visible; but not the back or underbelly of the work. By 1965, Davis had established a national reputation, having his first solo show at the Nicholas Wilder Gallery on La Cienega Boulevard in Los Angeles Today Davis' works can be found in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Tate Gallery (London), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Art Institute of Chicago among many others.

Pink Tulip
By Charles Pachter
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Charles Pachter (b. 1942) is one of the most collected and cherished Canadian artists. His iconic, uplifting, and patriotic images have earned their place in the nation's museums and the Canadian art canon. The Barn, along with Queen Elizabeth and the Moose, forms a triad of icons that Charles Pachter has repeatedly visited over the course of his career. Completed in 2021, this exemplary painting introduces Pachter's flowers. This recent series focuses on an entirely new subject for the artist that started early on in the pandemic. Realized in a time of uncertainty and despair, this body of work is remarkably optimistic. As with the best of his work, Pachter's charming imagery presents a new narrative on Canadiana, this time detailing the diverse flora encountered in his close surroundings. Capturing the profile of this romantic pink tulip...

JULIAN STANCZAK Sequential Chroma #4 1980 OP ART Painting Red Blue Violet Purple
By Julian Stanczak
Located in Rancho Santa Fe, CA
Signed, dated and titled on verso Original frame by the artist Provenance: Private Collection, Cleveland, Ohio; Acquired directly from the artist in 1980. Julian Stanczak's Sequential Chroma #4 (1980) is a striking example of Op Art—a movement known for its optical illusions and visual dynamism. Measuring 44 x 38 inches and rendered in acrylic on canvas, the work exemplifies Stanczak’s mastery of color relationships and geometric precision. The composition is meticulously constructed with a grid of squares that radiate an intricate interplay of hues, creating a mesmerizing visual effect. The painting’s title, Sequential Chroma #4, highlights Stanczak’s deliberate approach to exploring the sequential interaction of colors. The chromatic shifts within the grid seem to pulse, oscillate, and vibrate as the viewer’s gaze moves across the surface. This dynamic is not merely visual but psychological, as Stanczak’s careful modulation of tones creates a sense of depth and movement that defies the painting’s two-dimensional plane. The grid structure offers a sense of order, yet the gradation of color imbues the work with vitality and rhythmic energy. What makes this painting particularly compelling is its ability to engage viewers in an active experience. The eye is drawn into the grid’s center, where colors appear to intensify, then pulled outward as the edges subtly fade into cooler, darker tones. This shifting focus mirrors...
