Sam Francis
Bright Web, 1973 (SF73-5)

1973

About the Item

Bright Web is an acrylic on paper painting with an image size of 22 x 30 inches, signed and dated verso 'Sam Francis 1973 Tokyo' and framed in a custom, closed-corner, gold-leaf frame. In the Fall of 1973, Francis left for a one year stay in Tokyo. The vibrant culture and the energy of a new environment reinvigorated him, bringing forth a rebirth of color and focus to his palette. Bright colors return as parts collide and break apart, creating movement that moves from the red center out towards the edges of the sheet. At the time of his move, Francis had begun studying Jungian psychology as a way to better understand his dreams and subconscious life. This practice brought attention to the center, or the root of a person’s state of mind, and Francis may have taken the concept quite literally in Bright Web, 1973. For some time, dreams had begun to plague and overwhelm Francis in a way that he felt he needed to process through art - a notion that led to some of the most dynamic pieces of Francis’s career. Through his rare understanding of color and the effect it can have on the mind, Francis was able to express thought and emotions through art in a way that deeply registered with his audience. This work is identified with the archival identification number of SF73-5 in consideration for the forthcoming addendum to the Sam Francis: Catalogue Raisonné of Unique Works on paper, to be published by the Sam Francis Foundation. This information is subject to change as scholarship continues by the Sam Francis Foundation.

A multidisciplinary artist and experimental musician with synaesthesia, Jake-Andrew's practice is centred around the way the mind can perceive audio stimulus as colour, texture, shape and movement. Exploring sensory perception, Jake-Andrew documents the emotional and physical response to the relationships that exist between colour and sound, and how they can reflect the minutiae and melancholia of the human condition through gestural abstraction and introspective layering; exploring the progression of his physical practice for the digital renaissance by introducing pixel manipulation to digital gesture and occasionally physical attributes through coding. Jake-Andrew's work exists as an expressive, physical performance that allows him to create projected installation environments and immersive experiences; either on screen or in situ. Which affects the relationship that all of us have with colour and sound. Undertaken projects with Glenfiddich, Braun Audio...
