About the Item
Sandra Cohen’s “Doomed Romantic” is a 30 x 24 x .25 inch abstract acrylic painting on canvas board, loosely painted in blue, green, black, pink, red, and white. Stormy shapes of black and green descend through areas of eroded and garbled text into a luminous blue, where a heart-shaped pink area seems to fall to earth. This painting is unframed and the signature is on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
