About the Item
Sandra Cohen’s “Find Me” is a 30 x 24 x .25 inch acrylic painting on canvas board, loosely painted in luminous sunset colors of pink, orange, blue, and purple. In this abstracted landscape, an ‘x’ has been marked and overlaid by a suspended storm cloud of hard-edged black pixels interwoven with currents of electrified blue lines. Sporadically transmitting ‘S.O.S’ in morse code, the storm disperses into cascading fine white geometric curves spreading out towards the bottom. Inspired by the Hüsker Dü song “Find Me”. This painting is unframed, with the signature on the back.
Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids.
