Sandra Cohen
"Tilt”, Abstract, Geometric, Green, Blue, Black, Silver, Acrylic Painting, 2024

About the Item

Sandra Cohen’s “Tilt” is a 14 x 14 x 1 inch abstract geometric painting on cradled wood, in bright blue, green, black, white, and silver. At the center is an Earth-like circle filled with vibrant blue and vertiginous green. The background of flat black and white, overlaid with metallic silver concentric circles, reads as a horizon or indicator of planetary electro-magnetic polarity. Parts of this black and white background are formed into blunted lines that seem to be rotating in different directions towards their opposite sectors, pushing, pulling, and obscuring bits of blue and green. This painting is unframed and ready to hang; the sides are finished by extending the black and white background, and it is signed on the back. Sandra Cohen’s dreamlike painting and mixed media work explores the paradoxical nature she finds everywhere. Cohen layers a constantly shifting ground of memory with snippets of lyrics, invasive ‘earworms’, and the human tendency to create order from chaos. Music is intimately entwined with memory for Cohen, who has been a performing musician and songwriter. She also has a deep interest in science, especially the concepts of modern physics. Using techniques that vary from wet to dry and tight to loose, and processes that may weave between digital and tactile, the act of creating the work also reflects what she hopes emerges: glimpses of a true/false spectrum wavering into being as lustrous, rhythmic, and often darkly humorous hybrids. Cohen is represented by Fountain Street Gallery based in Boston, MA.
