André Dunoyer de Segonzac
French Post-Impressionist Oils 'Monumental Pair of Floral & Musical Still Lives'

Circa 1960

About

Circle of Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac and painted circa 1960. A very large pair of Neo-Classical Revival still-lives, composed predominantly in pastel shades of buff and blue with highlights of yellow and cadmium red; each showing coral and foliage massed in a central urn, the first with a mandolin to the left and the second flanked by a violin and a piccolo trumpet; each on stretched linen canvas prepared by Charles Roberson & Company of London. Andre Dunoyer de Segonzac first studied at the Academie de la Pallette under Jacques Emile Blanche. He soon left, however, to study free of formal training, and he later cited 1906 as the starting date of his artistic career. His first submission to the Salon d’Automne was in 1908 and the following year he exhibited at the Salon des Independents and he subsequently exhibited regularly at both Salons. In 1910, he became a member of the Section d’Or which emphasized the geometric aspects of Cubism and, in 1913, was one of the original Modernists exhibiting at New York’s ground-breaking Armory Show. A consummate graphic artist , he published a suite of etchings illustrating the Georgics of Virgil (1947) now considered by many to be the artist’s masterpiece and one of the great graphic milestones of Modernism. The gossamer delicacy of his etchings contrast with the thickly-painted surfaces and somber palette of his oil paintings, which reflect his admiration for, and indebtedness to, Courbet and Cezanne. Prolific until the very end of his life, de Segonzac died at the age of 90 in 1974.
