Andrea Kantrowitz
Golden Oysters One, Mushroom Fungi Still Life Painting, Yellow, Peach, Green

2023

About the Item

A golden oyster mushroom in hues of yellow, ochre, peach and orange is masterfully painted, arranged in a dynamic, asymmetrical composition, luminous against an emerald green background. Signed, dated and titled on verso. Andrea Kantrowitz invites you to look beyond a literal description of fruit and fungi, and see what else can be discovered. The artist embraces the contradictions of living flesh in the thick and heavy medium of oil paint: life’s elegance and absurdity, its universal processes of seduction, destruction and regeneration. Fruit and fungi stand in for human bodies, their forms shaped by the same evolutionary imperatives as our own, to go forth and multiply. Kantrowitz earned her EdD at Columbia University, New York, NY, her MFA from Yale University School of Art, New Haven, CT, and her BA from Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. She lives and works in Rosendale, NY.

This painting was inspired by the artists very first toy, a small blue giraffe, given to her as a day-old baby. It is something that has been around her whole life, and even though it is inanimate, there is a feeling of personification through the years of wear. Her brother as a baby would call giraffes “fa,” which is always a sweet memory she associate with this toy. Samantha Van Heest...
