About the Item
Anthony Mastromatteo re-introduced himself to the Grenning Gallery with his 2023 exhibition "Hello, My Name Is: Anthony Mastromatteo." The works included in the show were incredibly intricate trompe l'oeil oil paintings ranging in size from 7 x 5 inches to 48 x 36 inches. In supplement to the exhibition, Mastromatteo painted 10 pictographs on "Hello My Name Is" nametags and put them in plastic sleeves one would clip on their person for any kind of large function. There is always a bit of tongue and cheek in Mastromatteo's work, and it shows in these little vignettes. In this nametag, Mastromatteo paints a single detached rose. By painting the picture after the introductory words, the painting invites viewers to say the phrase, "Hello, my name is Rose" - is the painting introducing itself, or is it tricking the viewer into introducing themself as "Rose?" - Unless, in fact the viewer is named Rose.
This painting on paper can be wearable art, or mounted in a frame. Inquire for our further suggestions on framing.
Painting dimensions: 2.5 x 3.5 inches
Dimensions in the plastic holder: 4 x 5.5 inches
Artist Bio
The arts have been an integral part of Anthony Mastromatteo’s life for over 25 years. A Bachelor of Arts degree in Art History from Princeton University in 1992 led to a five year position at Christie’s auction house in New York City in the American Paintings, 19th Century Paintings and Maritime Paintings and Objects departments. As his exposure to the art world expanded he began studying the practice of art after work at the Art Student’s League in New York City. In 1997 he made the transition to full-time art study at the Water Street Atelier, a school of art practice based on the methodology of the French Academy and the French atelier system of the 18th and 19th centuries, under the tutelage of Jacob Collins. In 2002 he finished his studies and made the transition to working as a professional artist. He has worked solely as an artist since that time. He currently has representation with galleries in New York City, Los Angeles and Cleveland.
Anthony currently resides with his wife and daughter, Stella and Alba, in Akron, Ohio.

- "Being and Nothingness" trompe l'oeil & modernist oil painting, red butterfliesBy Anthony MastromatteoLocated in Sag Harbor, NY"Being and Nothingness" is a 2023 trompe l'oeil modernist oil painting. Mastromatteo pays homage to Malevich’s black square, and even positions it at the top left quarter of the canvas. The modernist symbol is austere, and formidable, yet it lays flat on the two-dimensional plane. Outside the square, amidst a wall of white, are little butterflies. Their angled wings...Category
