About the Item

Oil painting on canvas, depicting Flora, attributed to Antonio Franchi known as Lucchese (Villa Basilica, 1638 - Florence, 1709), with expertise by Prof. Giancarlo Sestieri. The work depicts a portrait of a lady in the guise of Flora, it was in fact widespread practice in the 17th century, and in particular in Florence, to portray female characters in allegorical garments. In particular, in this splendid canvas the woman is depicted with her head surrounded by a wreath of roses, her right hand resting on a basket of flowers and a rose in the left raised. The painting is fully confirmed in the comparison with his analogous works, such as the "Portrait of the Marchesa Lucrezia Rinuccini as Flora", the affinities between the two works are really close, not only with regard to the pictorial appearance and the taste of the presentation, but also on the strictly physiognomic plan, so as to make plausible the hypothesis that it may be the same character at slightly different ages, bearing in mind that the Marchesa Rinuccini was portrayed at the very young age of fifteen and a half, on the occasion of her wedding in 1681 with the Marquis Filippo Corsini . Our portrait faithfully reflects the stylistic code used by the Franchi, such as the accurate rendering of details and the elegance and grace that distinguish the characters depicted, who happened to be the official portraitist of the Medici court and who was one of the happiest interpreters of that predilection of the Baroque for portraits in mythological or biblical guise. His style developed from the typical Tuscan pictorial tradition, typical of Vincenzo Dandini and Giacinto Gimignani, and then evolved into an Emilian-style classicism and landed in the Roman Baroque. In the Uffizi Museum there is a self-portrait of him, commissioned by Prince Ferdinando. The work is in good condition, with some scattered restorations. The frame is in gilded wood in baroque style, from the early 19th Century. Reference Bibliography: S. Bellesi, in 'La pittura in Italia.
