About the Item
Hunting Trophy with Mallard Duck – Circle of Baldassarre de Caro (Naples, 1689–1750)
Italy, second half of the 17th century – very early 18th century
Oil on canvas, relined
Dimensions without frame: H 47 cm x W 35 cm
Dimensions with frame: H 54 cm x W 43 cm
This still life depicts a hunting trophy composed of game birds.
In the foreground, resting on a wooden surface, lies a male mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos), identifiable by its iridescent green head, white neck ring, and deep chestnut breast. In the shadowy background, other birds, including a woodcock and a quail, hang suspended.
The contrast between the dark background and the focused light on the mallard creates a dramatic Baroque effect, emphasizing the spatial construction and visual presence of the subject.
The hunting trophy genre became widespread in Italy during the 17th century, developing distinctive regional characteristics. In Naples, painters such as Baldassarre de Caro favored theatrical compositions with intense lighting and dramatic atmosphere. In contrast, northern Italian artists often used a denser brushwork and lighter tones, with less somber settings.
This work shares stylistic and compositional elements with the circle of Baldassarre de Caro, particularly in the arrangement of the birds, the rendering of feathers, and the controlled use of light and shadow. Its overall execution and evocative ambiance point to a Neapolitan origin in the late 17th century.
The canvas has been relined and is in good condition. Painted wooden frame.

Attr. Jacobus or Iacomo Victors (Amsterdam c. 1640 - 1705) Still life with birds
Oil on canvas, 112 x 133 cm
The still life examined here is a rare example of the simultaneous presence of live and dead animals in a single composition. On two rocky levels different ornithological species are neatly arranged, reproduced with the utmost fidelity and adherence to life. Mallards, doves, sparrows and a partridge placed on their backs can be recognized. The soft mantles with different chromatic tones, with the characteristic streaks and spots of color, together with the precise investigation of the various ornithological typologies, denote an observation of the real datum typical of the seventeenth-century Flemish tradition. Another mallard, this time alive, seems to have just settled on the rock, as if to observe the rich composition moving its neck. Its characteristic colors, the bright green of the head and the upper part of the neck, the yellow of the beak and the orange of the legs characterize the painting and capture the viewer's attention. The flight of the dove in the foreground is splendid, seen from above, the virtuosic pose and the brightness of its feathers, in an elegant modulation of grays tending to white, denote the stylistic quality of this work. It was probably created by a Flemish artist working in Italy in the second half of the seventeenth century: close analogies can be found with the game of Jacobus Victor...

Louis-Auguste Second, known under the name of Fereol, had an interesting multifaceted artistic career. He was born in an acting environment: himself the son of an actor, he was the cousin of Marie Dorval (the famous romantic actress who was Alfred de Vigny's mistress) and the nephew of Mademoiselle Mars.
After having done the military school of Saint-Cyr, he became a second lieutenant in the young imperial guard and took part in the campaign of France in 1814. But he quickly reconverted in the spectacle and becomes in 1817 lyric singer (tenor) at the Opéra-Comique where he officiated until 1838, before exercising his talents at the Théâtre de la Renaissance. He is also a playwright (for example he wrote "Five Years of Intermission" in 1833). A fairly famous figure at the time, his miniature portrait by Paul Gomien was exhibited at the Salon of 1835.
Painting is another of his activities, and not the least.
A pupil of Xavier Leprince, he exhibited at the Salon in 1824, and this very regularly until 1848. In 1834, he exhibited no less than 7 paintings! These are essentially landscapes, of a fairly classic style, representing views of the North (Douai, Boulogne, etc.), Picardy (Amiens), Paris and its surroundings, Fontainebleau, and above all of Sologne and Orleans, city where he attended high school. At the Salon, he was domiciled in Paris at various addresses in the Batignolles district until 1835, then in Orleans from 1837.
Widower in 1832 of his cousin Eugénie Boutet de Monvel whom he had married in 1822, he retired to his property of "L'ormette" in Saint-Denis en Val in the Loiret, before settling definitively in Orléans itself. in 1846. He leads a fairly active social life there (he had already founded the Musical Institute there, for example). His son Félix was born there in 1825, where he was a lawyer before embarking on a career as a doctor.
A staunch Bonapartist, holder of the Saint Helena medal, he was awarded the Legion of Honor in 1862. His exaggerated patriotism manifested itself one last time when he committed suicide on September 5, 1870 after learning of the surrender of Sedan. He is the great-grandfather of the brothers Jacques and Pierre Brissaud, the famous painters and illustrators.
Representative of the French tradition of hunting still lifes, this painting depicts a hanging...
