About the Item
The Brits, Original Contemporary Figurative Still Life Painting, 2014
36" x 48" x 1.5" (HxWxD) Oil on Canvas
Artist Benjamin Ferry utilizes highlight and shadow to capture the undulations in these carved busts of historical British figures. The paint is applied smoothly, but with enough of a weight to it to impress upon the viewer both the literal weight of the depicted objects, but also the weight they hold as leaders in history. A mint green paint job contrasts against the bronze statues and the wooden shelves they sit upon. As the viewer stares towards the painting, so do the figures stare back.
Artist Commentary:
I've currently been working within the theme of repetition, which allows me to take on many different genres of picture making. I find myself being drawn to man made vessels as the focus of these objects. This was a scene I came upon in the National Portrait Gallery in London. I was taken with just how very British each one of these men were, and how miserable and austere each one of them was in their gaze and attitude. I love British culture, and I enjoy how this picture is able to capture specific characters in society. I absolutely slugged the paint into this scene, to create that sense of weight and history, that a picture like this demands.

Artist Commentary:
This picture took several turns trying to decide how and what the photograph on the wall would eventually be. I tried several different variations before I finally settled on the image that eventually drove the title and subject matter of the piece. Had a lot of fun amping up the color palette.
