About the Item

Still life, Oil on Board Painting by Bryan Pearce, 1987 Additional information: Medium: Oil on board 61 x 50.8 cm 24 x 20 in Signed and dated verso Born in St Ives where he remained for his whole life, Bryan Pearce is recognised as a significant naïve artist and Peter Lanyon once said the artist’s learning disability gave his work ‘an awareness more direct’ than pure observation. Here a vivid still life of tulips and daffodils pop against the simple horizontal striped beach view, the spiked orange forms of the flower heads jutting into the landscape, the more rounded water jug beside the still life offering a slight balance to the otherwise very linear composition. Pearce’s characteristic flat style of representation is emphasised further by the heavy orange outlines which are reminiscent of stained glass windows. Bryan Pearce was born in St Ives, Cornwall in 1929. He was born with a then unknown condition which affects the development of the brain. Encouraged by his mother Mary, who was herself a painter, and then by other St Ives artists, he began drawing and painting in watercolours in 1953. From 1953 to 1957 he attended St Ives School of Painting under Leonard Fuller. In 1957 Pearce began painting in oils and started to exhibit regularly at the Penwith Gallery in St Ives. He became an Associate of the Penwith Society of Arts in Cornwall, and later a full member, having been sponsored by the sculptor Denis Mitchell. He is also a member of the Newlyn Society of Artists; it was at the instigation of Peter Lanyon that he had his first solo show at Newlyn Gallery in 1959. Now regarded as one of the country's foremost naïve painters, Pearce is well known for portraying the local St Ives landscape and still-life compositions in oil, conte, pen and ink, and pencil. His work evokes a sense of clarity through his sophisticated understanding of composition and simple renditions of space, colour and light. Bryan always worked slowly and methodically, but consistently, producing perhaps twelve oil paintings a year. Often compared to Alfred Wallis, the late Peter Lanyon has said of him: "Because his sources are not seen with a passive eye, but are truly happenings, his painting is original." Pearce exhibited throughout the country, including the New Art Centre, Victor Waddington Gallery in London; Beaux Arts in Bath and the Oxford Museum of Modern Art. Public Collections include: the Tate Gallery, the Arts Council, the Contemporary Arts Society and Kettle's Yard, Cambridge.

Still Life, Oil on Board Painting by John Armstrong, 1960
By John Armstrong
Located in Kingsclere, GB
Still Life, Oil on Board Painting by John Armstrong, 1960 Additional information: Medium: Oil on board 11 1/4 x 15 1/8 in 28.5 x 38.5 cm Signed and dated This painting shows Armstrong's earlier career as a theatre designer, with its subjects arranged on a window sill as if actors in a play; the leaf and muntin, painted in a similar tone of green, act as a mid-ground to the autumnal trees outside the Artist's London home. Painted after Armstrong had returned to the city from Lamorna, Cornwall, as a struggling artist, models were too expensive and so he resorted to using fruits and vegetables from his local market. Showing a Cycladic vessel that appears in other works from 1957 onwards, as illustrated in Lambirth's book, including Still life with Mushrooms from 1961. The distinctive brick-like pattern of Armstrong's brushstrokes shines through here. John Armstrong was a painter of imaginative subjects, designer of film and stage sets, mural painter and book illustrator. Born in Hastings, Sussex, John Rutherford Armstrong attended St Paul's School, London, and studied law at St John's College, Oxford, before taking up art at St John's Wood School of Art (1913-14). He served in the Royal Field Artillery (1914-19) before returning to St John's Wood School for a short period after the war. His first one-man exhibition was at the Leicester Galleries in 1928, where he first met members of the Unit One group, joining them for their 1933 exhibition. It was after this that Armstrong's work began to develop a Surrealist character. Much of Armstrong's oeuvre has its foundation in classical legend, landscape, or imagery, surely understandable given his classical education and WW1 service in the Near East. Varied Greek vase forms regularly make an appearance in his work from the mid-1930s, notably in his GPO poster...
