About the Item
This 28.75" x 24" acrylic on canvas painting was done by A. David Crown and depicts a still life painted in an abstract and simplistic style. The still life includes seven green pears, a purple vase, and a white lamp with a blue shade. These components are positioned upon a tan/beige table, in front of a solid maroon background. The pears are placed within the foreground of the table while the lamp and the vase are behind the pears. The lamp is the largest and seemingly the most prominent aspect of the work; the light blue shade and white base stand out against the dark red background, highlighting the contrast between the two colors. The subject matter depicted is devoid of any shading or three dimensional aspects besides the arrangement of the pears and the objects on the table, as they show depth. The overall simplistic style of the work creates a juxtaposition with the subject matter, as still life works are usually seen as a representational depiction of a realistic arrangement of items, and seeing as though this still life lacks the accuracy of what still life works normally depict, the artist is asserting the conceptual idea of removing the three dimensional qualities from a subject that historically focuses on theses aspects. The painting is framed in a wooden frame with linen liner.
A. David Crown, M.D. (1924 - 2016) was born in London, England, and received his education at Cambridge University, the University of London, and the London Hospital Medical School. In 1947, he became a physician and moved to Rochester, NY in 1948. He practiced internal medicine until 1982 when he retired. His retirement allowed him to pursue his passion for art full-time. His works are in numerous collections across America, Canada, Japan, and Europe. Crown was also the Founder and Director of the International Mezzotint Society. This society is dedicated to the promotion and appreciation of mezzotint, a printmaking process. His art has been the subject of one-man exhibitions at institutions such as the Jacksonville Museum of Art, the Polk Museum of Art, Orlando Museum of Art, Florida Atlantic University, University of Florida, and the State Capitol Building Rotunda, Tallahassee, Florida.
