David Burliuk
Still Life on the Beach in France

About the Item

Signed lower right. An exquisite painting executed during his travels, “Still Life on the Beach, France” depicts a vase of chrysanthemums perched along a sandy beach with sailboats along the French, Mediterranean, coast. The brush strokes are broad, easy, and give the feeling of a moment captured with ease and informal regularity. “Still Life on the Beach, France” is one of the best quality works from his French period, as it includes the detail of a village, a long beach, boats, with peaches and chrysanthemums balanced in the composition. The vase of flowers and fruit sit on top a cloth spread out on the beach specifically sized for the bouquet. Burliuk offers a symbolic and dream like nod to French Mediterranean culture.
