About the Item
Artist Commentary:
This mixed media painting includes the back of the Ranchos de Taos church that Georgia O'Keefe made famous in her painting. My painting places the church in its environment. Where O'Keefe's painting is starkly alone, emphasizing its shape, I include a tangle of flowering vines growing next to a shady porch.
Keywords: figurative
Artist Biography:
Denise Mumm was born in Munich, Germany and raised and educated in Iowa. She moved to NYC after college, remaining there until recently when she moved to Atlantic Highlands, NJ. Her mixed media paintings are inspired by scenes from her travels on land and by boat, by the persistent beauty in the details of where the human world meets the natural world. The settings of her paintings may be ostensibly mundane and unremarkable, but the beauty is revealed in the geometry of a boatyard, lush tangles of plants against manmade structures, and dramatic late-day light. Early on Mumm was a sculptor and even now approaches the creation of her mixed media paintings more as building them, rather than painting, putting down layer upon layer. They are acrylic paintings on wood panel with patterned or textured papers layered throughout with acrylic medium. She has employed this technique for about 20 years, learning it when she was a studio assistant for Miriam Schapiro. Mumm has been making art and exhibiting continually in the US since college, primarily in the NYC area.

Cape Cod Window
By Marion Buricatu
Located in Boston, MA
Artist Commentary:
This painting of a Cape Cod house is made of 468 little paper squares that I pasted on the canvas. The window, flowers, and bushes were then added with oil paint. My friends and family say that gluing together hundreds of little squares together is slightly obsessional, but I think it actually demonstrates great patience! I love to lose myself into creating and pasting these repeating patterns. Then, I disrupt them with a disconnected and more loose painting on top. But as a whole, both parts are in fact united and harmonious, as they belong to the same Cape Cod house. This is how I feel about myself: one person with two very different cultures. From the outside, they can look quite disconnected, but they actually are not. In fact, I find that I unite both cultures by painting them. What about you? Do you feel like you are made of disconnecting parts? And what do you do to unite them?
Words that describe this piece: window, flower, Cape Cod, Massachusetts, flower boxes, shrubs, greens, garden

As the Sun Sets - Colorful Mexican Landscape Painting
By Jeff Ferst
Located in Boston, MA
As the Sun Sets
30.0 x 10.0 x 1.5, 10.0 lbs
Oil Paint
Hand signed by artist
Artist's Commentary:
"San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is a wonderful and magical city. Its colonial buildings, year round gardens in bloom and beautiful campo all inspire the work of Jeff Ferst. The sunrise and sunsets over the Presa and the city are spectacular. Every time I walk down the hill from my house to the historic centre of town I am blown away. Each step brings a new view that stirs in my soul. I also love to paint my beautiful garden and the flowers therein. This painting is of the setting sun over the lake and just beyond the houses of Los Frailes. Whimsical and colorful. Edges of canvas have been painted black and painting is wired for hanging."
About the Artist:
Jeff is a colorist, an abstractionist and most of all a storyteller. Over the years, since early childhood, he has created art. In his youth in the Bronx drawing was his thing. In his early years at NYU Jeff was a print maker and created vibrant serigraph prints and etchings. He also was enamored with the tactile arts - ceramics and sculpture. He was lucky starting off to get representation at a Greenwich Village gallery – the 8th Street Gallery when he was 19. Then as a young adult Jeff discovered Canada, moved to Toronto and found his stride as a painter. Still true to his colourist roots painting still life and landscapes of the Canadian countryside. Galleries liked the work and began to represent him. As Jeff grew as a painter he began to play with texture. He also began to explore abstractions. The abstractions were at first fluid geometrics which were a play of color, form & texture. At the same time he was continuing his landscape paintings to meet the demand of his gallery affiliates. Then he fell in love with Tucson and the Sonoran desert. Moving there in 2012 changed his life. After moving there the work changed. Jeff's love of the desert came out in his work. Vibrant sunsets of intense colour became the focus to satisfy those who followed his landscapes and his abstractions became stories of life in the desert. These deconstructed landscapes if you will are vibrant paintings rich in symbol and emotion. Then in 2019 he moved to Mexico - San Miguel de Allende. Like Tucson it is the high desert, but it is more temperate and offers a better quality of life and freedom for his family and work. Here he paints glorious colorful stories of life in this colonial city. Jeff also paints nature - his garden and the abundant flora and fauna of the area. Recently he joined up with a cooperative gallery in SMA called Galeria Izamal. Throughout his career he has participated in a variety of known shows like Red Dot Miami, Scope Hamptons, Art Expo, etc, and has had relationships with galleries here in the US and Canada. He also has been a supporter of the US State Dept Art in Embassy program and has had more work exhibited globally including alongside Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, and Robert Indiana. In fact in the exhibition catalog his work "Fantasia" was singled out for being the "flagship piece of the exhibit." Jeff has also had the good fortune to have various publications cover his work calling his paintings “flamboyant,” “juicy,” and “full of life”. These days he can be found in his studio painting or doing a new mosaic...

The painting process has been an evolving experience for me from the time I was very young and first started painting in oil until now. Each stage had to be experienced and has led to a deeper understanding of what my expression in paint is all about. Painting traditional realism with good design as an important element was where I began.
Now, the evolution of my painting process has brought me to a point in which the subject, the texture of the oil medium and the physical application of the brushstrokes have become profoundly intertwined. All are so necessary to the finished work that if one were to be taken away the work would be left incomplete.
My hope is that the synthesis of the subject, design, expressive brush strokes and the texture of the paint come together to create a work of art in which the viewer experiences all of these elements at once in a powerful statement on canvas.
“New Mexico is a land of earthy colors and textures. Rocks, dirt, twiggy plants, reds and ochres against blue grays, dry, wet, cold, hot, mostly hard and rough create a movement in visual and tactile rhythms that surround me. There are times when I am standing in the New Mexico landscape on a warm day when I want to lay down and embrace it. I can’t help but be madly in love with the textures of everything around me. I am drawn to the irresistible forces that seem to bring me closer to the earth. The more I experience these textural qualities of the land, the more I am compelled to use them to express what I want to say. “
Martha was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended Carlow University and received a degree in art and art education. Later she studied art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Southern California.
At the beginning of her career she worked as an art teacher and art department head in Maryland and California. After becoming a full-time artist she taught watercolor and oil painting workshops in the United States and abroad. After moving to Colorado she became a master instructor for a branch of the Art Students League in Colorado Springs and then set up her own classes in her studio where she presently teaches on a weekly basis.
She was director for many years of large adventure workshops combining painting and exploring. Some of these adventures include Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, where Georgia O’Keefe painted, a yearly excursion on a Clipper Ship in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas stopping at many ports to paint and an exciting workshop in Salvador, Brazil, painting the colorful region and people there. It was due to these painting trips on which the artists had to carry around all their painting equipment that she put together a compact painting travel kit that she marketed and that many plein air artists use as they travel to their many painting locations.
Martha’s work has been featured in many art publications such as: Southwest Art Magazine, Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Artist’s Magazine and Art Collector’s Magazine. Her work has been used in several books on painting; “Making Your Watercolors Look Professional,” by Carole Katchen, The Best of Watercolor Series, Rockport, Press, “How to Paint Better Watercolor Paintings,” by Jerald Brommer and Jerald Brommer’s Art Education Posters for High Schools.
Her work has received many awards in national juried competitions including numerous best of shows awards. Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, New Mexico Watercolor Society, Pennsylvania Watercolor Society, Rocky Mountain Watercolor Society, Pikes Peak Watercolor Society, Montana Watercolor Society and the Adirondacks National and the San Diego Watercolor Society to name a few. She has been awarded signature membership into the American Watercolor Society and the National Watercolor Society.
Over her career as an artist she has had the privilege of being able to work with many painting groups and institutions:
Instructor of painting at the Jade Fong Watercolor Workshops in Carmel, California
Instructor at La Romita School of Art in Umbria, Italy
Instructor at Montfacon in Limoux, France
