About the Item
The painting is a light, quick study, executed from life in an impressionistic manner. It is not a deliberately composed still life on a given theme, but rather a collection of randomly placed objects, as if glimpsed or overheard, that together form the harmony of a single whole. What inspired the artist, and what did he strive to capture? The painting's color palette consists of closely spaced, iridescent shades—silver, olive, pearl, and ochre—applied in short, abrupt brushstrokes that do not repeat one another. Only the lily-of-the-valley leaves offer a vibrant green contrast against the overall close-knit palette. The reflection in the mirror adds an additional dimension to the seemingly modest and detail-free motif, a mystical touch of the looking glass.
