A statement from the artist: I have the great fortune of having a Hudson Valley garden that produces, each and every year, a bountiful array of flowers whose realism — expressed through detailed botanical perfections and imperfections — cannot be denied. At the same time, upon a looser examination, this naturalistic realism can dissolve into visual juxtapositions of color, texture, lines, shapes, and light that suggest nature can also be understood as an abstraction. These paintings are inspired by nature’s duality: able to be observed as both real and abstract.
Each work is a multi-layered surface of oil paint and wax. The dark underpainting is visible under the loosely painted, abstract, and heavily textured white surface. The intricacies and specificities of the plants and flowers are then delicately drawn into and onto this abstract and randomized surface. Subtle highlights are then added in response to the specific context of flower and background. The contrast of the loose surface and the highly detailed rendering of the flower varies as you move closer or further from the painting. In eliminating strong or representational color, the surface images and textures are able to exist in an ambiguous space where image and background coexist, separated only by the thinnest of lines.
From careful observations come deeper understandings and unexpected revelations – an unplanned journey.
About the artist: Donise English works abstractly in both painting and sculpture and has exhibited her work in academic institutions, museums and galleries throughout the United States. She received an MFA in Painting from Bard College and a BS in Art History from SUNY New Paltz. She is also a Professor Emerita of Studio Art at Marist College and a recipient of numerous awards including a New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting.

Donise English
Donise English is a Poughkeepsie-based artist who received her bachelor of science from Art History State University College at New Paltz in 1977 and MFA from Bard College in 1986 and is currently a Professor of Studio Art at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. English is interested in drawing and collaging multiple layers of information that refer abstractly to maps, architectural drawings and blueprints or patterns and structures found in such things as roller coasters, power lines and fences. She uses gouache and collaged paper in a series of layers that are a visual and ideological response to the previous layer to define her pictorial space. For each piece, English creates a set of rules to follow about the use of a limited palette, a grid format, opacity of paper and whether a piece may include curving lines or maintain a rectilinear structure. English has received numerous awards including a 2018 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship in Painting; the Invitational Award for Outstanding Contemporary Talent from the University of Bridgeport, Connecticut; Purchase Prize from the “11th National Juried Exhibition” at the College of Notre Dame of Maryland; 1st Prize, “Women in the Visual Arts,” Erector Square Gallery, New Haven, Connecticut; the Joseph A. Cain Memorial Purchase Award for Sculpture, Del Mar College, Texas, Honorable Mention and others.

Joy Taylor’s paintings transform botany into a personal vision. Her recent series on canvas, playfully titled the “Boo-K” paintings, defy traditional still life depictions that often seek to tame and order the objects of the world. On the contrary, Taylor’s subjects are never still. Her floral forms have the crisp, clean qualities of cut paper; sharp, decisive lines slice through blocks of pure pigment to create defined edges of leaves, vines and blossoms. The colors are constructed as well as the form. Her exuberant palette of oranges, blues, magenta and green echo the complimentary colors favored by the Fauvists. Color is an element in and of itself in her work. This balance of sparkling color and form is irrepressible, at times disconcerting and even dangerous in its boldness.
