CHRYSANTHEMUMS IN A GREEN VASE EDWARD BEALE British contemporary artist.

About the Item

Edward Beale 1950,,,2017. British Edward Beale was born in London in 1950, at the age of sixteen he began attending morning drawing classes at Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts and was accepted there as a full time student in 1968. Beale went on to the Royal Academy Schools in 1976, where he won the Edwin Landseer Prize and the David Murray Traveling Scholarship twice. After graduating from the Royal Academy he was offered a one-man show at the Royal Academy Schools by the Keeper, Peter Greenham. He later took part in ‘The Broad Horizon’ exhibition organized by The National Trust Foundation for Art in association with Agnew’s. The exhibition consisted of paintings of Trust properties. The painting Beale made of Corfe Castle was bought by a Canadian collector who commissioned Beale to make some paintings in Kenya. Soon after his return home from Kenya he began a series of etchings of the animals at London Zoo where he was provided with studio space. During this time an Australian TV company filmed him for a documentary which was shown in Australia and South East Asia. Beale has exhibited at numerous mixed exhibitions and has had several one-man shows in London. My paintings are about how things feel as much as how they look. Working in front of the subject gives a sense of immediacy and being outside in the elements always presents unexpected episodes and occurrences. Coping with these keeps the whole painting process vital and exciting. The balance between control and chance means that a painting will undergo numerous states before it reaches a conclusion. While I am methodical about the practical aspects of painting, the process itself may go through a chaotic phase until I arrive at the end result. Drawing gives the underlying structure but the brush marks must stand for the thing I am painting in a way that makes the viewer intensely aware of the paint itself. Working wet-into-wet can make the paint build up to an impasto. Working on the spot sets certain limitations and so the biggest landscapes are usually no more than 2 by 4 feet. I paint on wooden panels prepared with a white ground. The locality where I live in Lambeth has undergone much change over the last few decades and my paintings form a documentation of demolition and rebuilding. When possible I paint from rooftops to get a wide vantage point and to overcome some of the practical difficulties of painting at pavement level. For a few months I was given access to a 5th floor balcony on the Albert Embankment from where there were unimpeded views upstream towards Battersea and Vauxhall and downstream towards Westminster. New building developments have already altered those views. For some years I have painted near the Pyrenees around Ceret. There are interesting contrasts between the orchards in blossom and the higher ground which is a wilderness of dry wooded scrubland inhabited by wild boar. The Tramontane wind affects the landscape, making the cork oaks bend and grow in irregular shapes. The area presents a different colour and tonal range as the light is so much stronger than at home. A few years ago I painted in the Segovia region of Spain which is on the pilgrim route to Santiago de Compostela. The countryside is beautiful with early crops of corn, but it is also tinged with an atmosphere created by herds of grazing fighting bulls and vultures flying above. Developments in response to working in the open apply to studio work. I look for the fundamental dynamics of composition, colour and form to create a sense of rhythm and movement. Portraits and life painting present unique problems. I try and convey the fleshiness and presence of the sitter. Resemblance is very much to the fore when painting people yet it is one of the most subjective and fluid elements. Each painting presents unique problems and finding solutions makes the process endlessly fascinating. Edward Beale very sadly passed away in 2017. Beale’s work was amongst those selected to represent the Royal Academy Alumni Association at an exhibition in Florence at the Centro Modigliani.

STILL LIFE WITH STRADIVARIUS T W QUINN BRITISH ARTIST
By TOMAS WILLIAM QUINN
Located in Pollenca, Illes Baleares
Born of Irish parents in 1918, Tom W. Quinn has quite simply dedicated his life to art. A life dedicated to art? Yes, and a heart and soul, too. As this exhibition opens he will have just reached the grand age of 93, but in his rambling, light-filled studio in the Dordogne, Tom Quinn continues to paint every day, – depicting in beautifully soft, chalky hues the world around him – busy cafés...

Composition in Blue, Oil Painting
By Lisa Nielsen
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
Artist Lisa Nielsen captures a cool and soft atmosphere in this still-life piece. She expresses freedom to experiment with the arrangement of elements by adding glasses, teacups, and ribbons. Lisa infuses shades of blue throughout the entire composition. She adds subtle contrasts of color for easiness to the eyes.

About the Artist
There;s a certain innocent joy that comes through in Lisa Nielsen;s artwork. She finds beauty in the everyday and often ordinary, whether it;s painting a pretty girl in the garden or spending time with her daughter at Chipotle - and let;s face it, what isn;t beautiful about a burrito bowl? Lisa likes to say she captures moments in the journey of life. What we see in her art is all part of her life philosophy: to be still, to breathe, to exhaust the small moment.
