About the Item
"Mockingbirds in Paradise" is an American Realist still life with colorful landscape. The landscape was inspired by well-known mid-nineteenth century Hudson River School paintings, from artists like Thomas Cole, Frederick Church, and Asher Durand.
Edwina Lucas was born and raised on Long Island, New York. The arts have always played a major role in her life. At the age of five, Lucas was taught the fundamentals of oil painting by her mother and fell in love with the medium.
In 2013 she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Skidmore College with a major in Studio Art and minor in Art History. Her senior thesis, a triptych portraying figures in water, earned honors from the department.
Today, Lucas lives and works in Sag Harbor, NY. In her paintings, she strives to capture the beauty of the natural world and the transformative power of light.
Lucas makes an effort to work from life and in natural light. She continues to find the joy and satisfaction in painting that drew her to the medium as a child.

Morning Light
By Maryann Lucas
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
“Morning Light” epitomizes the abundance of Spring with its bustling bouquet of white lilies, yellow roses, and a sliced open, ready to be eaten pink grapefruit. Despite the levity of the scene, Lucas has challenged herself with space, making a clear contrast between subject and background. She is consciously rejecting the “ironed on” effect of a subject onto a canvas, a trap to which lesser artists might succumb.
Artist Bio
Maryann Lucas lives and works in Sag Harbor. She is primarily self-taught but has also received instruction and support from wonderful and generous members of the East End artistic community. Working exclusively in oils, Lucas sets out almost daily to create plein aire landscapes and seascapes. In her studio, she works directly from life and captures the beauty of natural light as it transforms ordinary objects into visual delights.
Lucas wants her work to celebrate all that is well with this world and brilliant in this life, despite its pockets of darkness.
For me, she says, I know I am in the Presence of something beautiful, when it steals my breath, silences my mind, pushes out everything else and draws me in. I trust That. I use That to guide my hands as I arrange a still life or scan a landscape to determine where to set down my easel. Ultimately, That is what drives me to paint.
Becoming evermore skilled as an oil painter is another of Lucas goals. To that end she remains teachable, finding it refreshing and vital for her own growth to paint with others. She has studied with favorite artists including Michael Klein...

Artist Statement
“The magnolia tree and I share common rots in the Southeast. The Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee are home to us both. This stately, ancient tree is native to the Southeast. Its large fragrant blossoms and dark, shiny leaves adorn the green lawns and line the streets of the small towns where I am from. So, when I moved to California, I was pleasantly surprised to see this icon from the South growing freely here as well! This paining, with its representatives from the Southeast (the Magnolia and Blue Jay) and the West (the Plums and Persimmons) shows how roots can expand and grow to embrace new beginnings.”
