About the Item

Emma Hirst (US based) "Clam Shells and Their Shadows" is an oil painting that depicts an interior still life with six clam shells laid out on a white surface with their long cast shadows. Emma Hirst (b. 1988) is a representational oil painter based out of Oakland, CA where she was born and raised. Emma has always had a passion for drawing and painting, and has been drawn towards realism since the beginning of her career. Having a mother who is a full time artist, Emma was fortunate enough to have an endless resource of art supplies and support towards her artistic endeavors. After being introduced to the work of Anthony Waichulis through John Pence Gallery, she began a journey studying under him in 2006 as just an eager teenager, eventually completing the rigorous "Language of Drawing" and "Language of Painting" programs in 2015 by working as a full time apprentice. Emma continues to work realistically and draws significant inspiration from nature and natural light. She enjoys putting together unique and complex still life compositions, often incorporating elements of geometry, using natural forms. Some of her still life work features negative space as a primary element of the composition, while other pieces eliminate negative space all together in order to focus solely on the details of the subject. Emma’s work has started to branch out into landscape and portrait pieces, but they remain detailed and strongly focused on composition and the natural world. Second only to her passion for drawing and painting, Emma possesses an avid love for teaching and speaking about art and art education. She holds a desire, and feels a responsibility, to share her knowledge of technical skill building and two dimensional representation. Emma began her teaching endeavors in 2016 as a substitute teacher over the course of 5 weeks at Ani Art Academy Anguilla, and has gone on to develop workshops and educate students through online mentorship.

Clam Shells (Still Life Photograph of Blue/White Shells with Drift Wood) by David Halliday 10 X 15 inches, 17 x 22.5 inches framed Color Work Series archival pigment print edition #2 of 25 In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of everyday life in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This seaside still life of deep blue and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a concrete surface in front of a cream colored plaster wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects. About the artist: American, b. 1958, Glen Cove, NY, United States, based in Schodack Landing, NY, United States Elegant still lifes bathed in natural light, so masterfully composed one could forget that it is, in fact, a photograph – this is how we’ve come to recognize David Halliday’s work. The artist first gained recognition for his sepia toned silver gelatin prints of common place objects and food staples, emphasized by sublime balances of form, texture, and shadow one could liken to classical painting. In more recent years the artist began embracing his subject matter with modern pops of color in surreal arrangements; vegetables and fruits eccentrically coupled with fish nets and cutlery balanced on undefined tabletops, seeming to float in midair. Now the photographer is retracting his lens to encompass the studio itself as his subject. In a self-portrait of sorts, Halliday skillfully combines elements of his craft in a modest interior...

By David Halliday
Located in Hudson, NY
Still life photograph of purple and white clam shells on pale grey and beige background archival pigment print, made in 2007 by David Halliday 10 X 15 inches unframed Edition of 25 In this series, Halliday captures the beauty of 'the ordinary' in still lifes of various objects and vegetation arranged against simple backgrounds. This nautical themed still life of deep purple and white clam shells beside a piece of drift wood is set on a light grey table top against a cream colored wood wall. The subtle color palette extenuates the various textures and gentle shadows cast on the objects.
