Reproduction British early 18th century pearwood frame, stained & painted Literature: Here is Weissbort’s answer to Cézanne’s Green apples of 1873 or Gauguin’s Still life with apples: a re-imagining of that vibrant and idiosyncratic arrangement of randomly-selected, misshaped fruits as if through the classicizing eyes of Chardin. The result is a modern and intriguing take on a still life painting: an apparently fortuitous and accidental arrangement of rather humble fruit, given depth and a classical harmony. GEORGE WEISSBORT - (1928 -) was born in Belgium and moved to London at the age of 7. He attended the Central School of Art & Design (now St Martin?s) where he was taught by Ruskin Spear and Rodrigo Moynihan. He was influenced by Arthur Segal to move from the abstract expressionism of the 1940s to realism, and by Bernard Meninsky, who taught life drawing at the Central School, to study the Old Masters. He turned first to artists such as C?zanne and Matisse, and later to Vermeer, Chardin, Velasquez, Corot, Titian and Piero della Francesca, amongst others. He has exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy, the Royal Society of Portrait Painters and the Fine Art Society. In 2006 he had a one-man retrospective exhibition at the Chambers Gallery, London, and in 2008 another at the Denise Yapp Gallery, Whitebrook, Monmouth. He has written essays on art criticism, looking at art, Lucien Freud, and Vermeer; these are available on his webpage.
