Heinrich Krause
Küchenstillleben

About the Item

If one tries to describe Heinrich Krause’s almost one-century work in a few words, one recognizes an artist who, despite continuously changing artistic trends, remains faithful to cerebrally depicting his impressions in his individual way. Although the formal language of his works changes and develops over time, it remains committed to the principles of clarity and reduction to the essentials. The extensive and complex oeuvre of Heinrich Krause opens itself to the viewer only by closer study, whereby even connoisseurs still discover new aspects to his oeuvre. The artist is frugal with the ingredients for easy success: Nor the charm nor the heroic or mundane elements have lost their validity in his works. Portraits are of high importance in the oeuvre of Heinrich Krause. He manages to capture insistent characters in unobtrusive portrayals. It is always much more than a moment that is captured: the portrayed encapsulate their own world in the paintings through closed gestures or digressive gaze and which becomes visible to the viewers only after closer inspection. The self-portraits of the artist, which are always to be understood as a manner of self-questioning and regular attempts to find his place of belonging, are especially honest and revealing in their expression. While Krause presents himself at a young age as a self-confident painter with a serious sight, who skillfully implements the utensils of his profession into his works, his late self-portraits are an oppressive anticipation of his incipient blindness, which ultimately disables his work. The painter’s avoiding or absent look in the portraits that the viewer encounters is not necessarily an empty on, but it is a direct, emotional capture. The landscape paintings by Heinrich Krause show not only influences of French impressionism and its reception in Austria, but above all a clear imprint by Cezanne. His vibrant color surfaces are the starting point for the development of his unmistakably unique style. With often only two main colors and a strict compositional structure, mostly deserted, formally strongly withdrawn landscapes emerge that radiate with a proud grandeur. Heinrich Krause gave decisive impulses to Austrian art of the 20th century and stands out from this period and its broad spectrum of artistic trends and styles as a singular and unyielding phenomenon that awaits a reassessment and further appreciation.
