About the Item

A wonderful pair of beautifully detailed still life oil paintings with Italian landscape and cityscape backgrounds by American contemporary artist James Aponovich (1948-). Aponovich was born in Nashua, and attended the University of New Hampshire at Durham. Although he began his career as a portraitist and figure painter, often of himself, he has been known since the early 1980s for his elaborate still life compositions. He began to exhibit during the 1970s, showing his work at the annual NH Art Association Currier shows from 1973 – 1985, winning prizes for his drawing. In 1976 he was given his first major solo show at New England College in Henniker; it was followed by one at the Currier Museum in 1979. Married to Elizabeth Johannsen a professional horticulturist, he has found a niche in painting still lifes in landscape backgrounds. Aponovich’s work features complex compositions often set against idealized Italian landscapes, especially since his 2010 as visiting artist at the American Academy in Rome. A Lifetime Fellow of the NH State Council on the Arts, Aponovich was named New Hampshire’s Artist Laureate in 2006. He has exhibited widely in galleries and museums, including a 2005 retrospective at the Currier Museum ahead of his artist laureate honor. Now a nationally known artist, his work may be seen in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Portland Museum of Art. The left painting features a table adorned with a vase of sunflowers, assorted fruit, and other objects on a colorful tablecloth with an Italian countryside background titled “La Campana,” and the right painting features a table adorned with a vase of lilies, assorted fruit, and a variety of objects and textiles, with an Italian cityscape background titled “La Citta”. Both are oil on canvas, signed lower left, with the right painting titled on verso “La Citta,” signed and dated 1999 by the artist on verso, with a Clark Gallery, Lincoln MA label dated 2000. Dimensions: Each measure 60 in H x 48 in W, actual; 65.5 in H x 53.5 in W x 1.5 in D. A fabulous pair of works by this accomplished contemporary artist! We are also offering these paintings individually- please see separate listings. Ref: 7

STILL LIFE - Oil on canvas cm. 80x90 by Massimo Reggiani, Italy 2007 The origins of still life can be found in Dutch painting. At the beginning of Dutch painting, artists included additional elements in their religious compositions, depicting them in a realistic and meticulous way to the point that these paintings included small still lifes inserted spontaneously into their compositions. Reggiani composed this still life inspired by the Dutch school. In the painting we observe white grapes, beautiful white flowers collected in a glass vase, a book and an ancient globe...
