She trained at the Pratt Institute and continued privately with Frank Brangwyn in London and Joaquín Sorolla in Spain, studies that informed her hallmark combination of vigorous brushwork and luminous color. A close friend of Louis Comfort Tiffany, Peterson traveled widely across Europe and North Africa and participated in numerous exhibitions in the U.S. and abroad. Peterson is frequently discussed alongside American Impressionists and modern colorists such as Childe Hassam, Cecilia Beaux, Lilla Cabot Perry, and Mary Cassatt. Her floral still lifes remain especially sought after for their bold chroma, decisive drawing, and modern sensibility.
