Jarvis Wilcox
Koi and Water Lily

About the Item

Represented By George Billis Gallery. As the practitioner of a non-verbal art, Jarvis Wilcox’s first objective is to intrigue the viewer into spending enough time with the painting to absorb the atmosphere and be seduced into entering a new unfamiliar world. The art in painting is not simply the presentation of an object or objects so that the viewer is wowed by the trompe l’oeil or the virtuosity of execution, but an exploration of interactions of the objects represented as well as their relationships to their surroundings, the haunting echoes of relationships in the everyday experience of the viewer. In other words, the poetry of painting lies not in the images presented so much as in the emotional connections stimulated, brought to mind and made real by each viewer’s individual, unique response to the picture. Each viewer must have her/his own response, but if the work is good, all responses will be related, though individual. Art, any art, is a unique means of communicating and experiencing intuitive and/or subjective knowledge and understanding. This is the well-spring of Wilcox’s painting. He communicates the excitement, the delight, and the insight he discovered in seeing and then making the painting. In a way a painting is a mood sustained and realized. A picture cannot be comprehended in a glance; paintings, like any of the temporal arts as well as good red wines, take time to reveal themselves. Please enjoy!

Branching out
By John Morfis
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
An oil painting of a tomato still life. On a neutral background sits a larger tomato and 6 smaller tomatoes still attached to a vine. The two groups are divided by a diagonal slash of branch. Painting dimensions: 6 x 13 inches Framed dimensions: 12 x 19 inches John Morfis was born in Bayville, Long Island in 1976. His humble beginnings made pursuing a career in art difficult and paradoxically necessary. Fixated on making things aesthetically pleasing, John made an extreme departure from his family life when he chose to base his life on art. Surrounded by mechanics, welders, and otherwise trade workers John had a tough time expressing his interest in a world much more utilitarian and much less expressive and impractical. With an extraordinary desire to be an artist and a grant awarded, John was able to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from the University of Hartford in 1998. While there John studied oil painting under American realist Stephen Brown...

Bay Haven Views
By Viktor Butko
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Two Adirondack chairs look out onto the picturesque bay from their secluded position. One chair is tilted towards the other as if their owners are in conversation. A sailboat sits on the horizon. Framed dimensions: 32 x 37 inches Artist Bio: Viktor Butko was born in 1978 in Moscow, into a family of artists. He often visited the studio of his grandfather, the famous artist Victor Chulovich, and watched the creation of paintings. As you may imagine, this has inspired him to start painting. Viktor’s first steps in art were directed by his grandfather and his parents, artists Nickolay Butko and Marina Chulovich, he then studied at the Moscow Art School, which is known for a high level of training. After completing his training at the art school, Butko painted at the Academic Dacha of Artists, created by the great Russian artist Ilya Repin for students of the Academy of Fine Arts. There he worked under the guidance of famous artists Alexey Gritsay and Tkachev brothers, which had a big impact on his creativity. Viktor’s first solo show was held in the United States, in 2002 at the McCarthey Gallery, one of the foremost dealers in the United States for Russian Impressionist art. This marked the beginning of a long cooperation with the gallery. Later, in 2016, He took part in an international plein air event, which was organized by American painter Ben Fenske and art dealer Laura Grenning. As a result of this Russian-American Painting Alliance a large exhibition was held in the Grenning Gallery...
