About the Item

Represented By George Billis Gallery. As the practitioner of a non-verbal art, Jarvis Wilcox’s first objective is to intrigue the viewer into spending enough time with the painting to absorb the atmosphere and be seduced into entering a new unfamiliar world. The art in painting is not simply the presentation of an object or objects so that the viewer is wowed by the trompe l’oeil or the virtuosity of execution, but an exploration of interactions of the objects represented as well as their relationships to their surroundings, the haunting echoes of relationships in the everyday experience of the viewer. In other words, the poetry of painting lies not in the images presented so much as in the emotional connections stimulated, brought to mind and made real by each viewer’s individual, unique response to the picture. Each viewer must have her/his own response, but if the work is good, all responses will be related, though individual. Art, any art, is a unique means of communicating and experiencing intuitive and/or subjective knowledge and understanding. This is the well-spring of Wilcox’s painting. He communicates the excitement, the delight, and the insight he discovered in seeing and then making the painting. In a way a painting is a mood sustained and realized. A picture cannot be comprehended in a glance; paintings, like any of the temporal arts as well as good red wines, take time to reveal themselves. Please enjoy!

Two Pears with Grapes and Shallot
By Randall Mooers

My paintings begin with a serious sense of play, both in the staging and the creating of the compositions. It is at this beginning stage that I operate under the Dadaist dictate that “anything can be art”, and at the same time I seek out a balanced and harmonious composition by way of line, shape, and color. I work according to my whimsy, sometimes seeking to assert some form of narrative however personal or ambiguous, and other times I am simply satisfied with the hint of a human presence. Once I have my compositions the paintings then very quickly become about work, a very labor intensive work that forces me to focus my mind and slow things down (which I feel is relevant especially in this day and age of high-speed everything). A great amount of effort is spent on trying to get to the highest level of finish that is possible according to my current skill level. For inspiration I have drawn from the past four centuries of object specific paintings, from the ontbijtjes (laid tables) of the 17th Century Dutch masters such as Willem Kalf, Jan Davidsz de Heem, Abraham van Beijeren...

Signed lower right, 'Goetz' for Jack Goetz (American, born 1919) and painted circa 1995. Additionally signed, verso, and titled, 'Onions!' A bright and breezy study of white onions in a blue glass bowl contrasted against a Regency-striped material of red, yellow and green against a cream background. Goetz has painted and exhibited with success for many years and continues to paint at the age of 104. Speaking of himself, the artist says: "I studied arts and languages at Santa Monica College, taking classes in oil and watercolor painting, sculpture, ceramics, art history and music. At the same time, I studied with master painter Sergei Bongart. Because he taught many people in the movie business, I had fun meeting and painting with people...
