Joanne Tod (b. 1953) is a renowned Canadian artist acclaimed for her unwavering approach to realism, technical precision, and critical wit. She is also one of the country's most celebrated living portrait artists.
Between 2018-2019, Tod's oeuvre focuses on the notion of duality. Considering composition, human nature, and meaning, she was partly inspired by an act of self-reflection after taking an ancestry test. This notion manifests in Tod's treatment of reflective surfaces, and sometimes with her reflected presence in paintings.
"Black Tile" is an eye-catching painting. Punchy in stature and content, this work is a ideal model for Tod's ability to inject life into her painted objects or scenes. Although she is painting a black surface, she uses a myriad of colors and chromatic blacks to convey the texture and reflections on the tile.
Tod's luminous ceiling tile paintings appear, on first glance, as precious objects.
