Dr. Thomas L. Zamparelli, in his book John Strevens: The Man and His Works, explains the enduring acclaim and success of the painter: “The costume pieces of John Strevens are certainly the clearest manifestations of his ‘incurable’ romanticism and attachment to the past. Very simply, Strevens is in love with an era and a lifestyle which today survives in the pictures of Sargent and Béraud, the operettas of Franz Lehar, the novels of Proust, Gide, and Henry James 0 and, of course, on the captivating canvases of Strevens himself [When alive]. Strevens [was] the best-known living chronicler of the Edwardian beau monde. His name has become synonymous with the portrayal of th elegant divertissements of upper-class society of the time - balls, parties, receptions, sporting events, evenings at the opera and theater - all those occasions for people-watching where one could see and be seen . . . his formal costume pieces . . . give us a glimpse of the chic entertainments and worldly pleasure of High Society. These are windows onto a romanticized world of plush draperies, blazing chandeliers, swirling ball gowns, magnificently coiffed and bejeweled woman, and tall and dashing and dignified gentlemen in elegant, formal attire. Moreover, many of these works continue the tradition of Victorian narrative painting and thus invite us to invent a story based on the costumes, the expressions, the lavish surroundings and especially the animation and grouping of figures.” Stevens continued the English Impressionist tradition well into the twentieth century. His ideal vision of feminine beauty set within “the half real, half-imagined golden era” before the First World War.
