About the Item

Title of the Artwork: Hunting Still Life Artist: Josep Serrasanta (1916-1998) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 39.37 x 31.89 in Date: 1949 Artistic Movement: Romantic Realism with influences from Tenebrism and the Spanish Baroque tradition Condition: Unframed Description of the Artwork This magnificent oil painting by Josep Serrasanta depicts a hunting still life with mastery in the use of color and light. The artist combines a sober palette dominated by dark and earthy tones to highlight the volumes of the hunted birds and the objects that accompany them, creating an intimate and almost theatrical atmosphere. The vigorous brushstrokes and detailed modeling of textures reinforce the expressive character of the scene. The composition recalls the Baroque tradition of Spanish still-life painters such as Francisco de Zurbarán and Luis Meléndez, while the use of light and contrast places the work in a more contemporary current, close to Symbolism and Romantic Realism. Biography of the Artist Josep Serrasanta (Buenos Aires, 1916 – Valldoreix, Barcelona, 1998) was a Catalan painter born in Argentina. From Catalan parents, his family moved to Catalonia during his childhood, where he grew up and developed his artistic career. He studied at the School of Arts and Crafts of La Lonja in Barcelona, being a disciple of painter Francesc Gimeno. His work spans both easel painting and murals. He was known for his depictions of landscapes of small abandoned villages, still lifes, and representations of Barcelona’s gypsy women. Among his most notable contributions are the murals of Santa Maria Church in Castelldefels and the domes of the Lleida Cathedral. Serrasanta was awarded the Grand Prix International of Cannes (1964) and the Grand Cross of Commander of the French National Merit. Throughout his career, he exhibited in important cities such as Spain, France, Japan, and the United States. Comparable Artists The work of Josep Serrasanta connects with the tradition of great Spanish still-life painters of the Golden Age such as Francisco de Zurbarán and Luis Meléndez, but it is also in line with contemporary 20th-century painters such as José María López Mezquita and Manuel Benedito for their realistic approach and interest in detail and atmosphere. His treatment of color and light also relates to European artists like Édouard Manet in his still lifes.

STILL LIFE - Oil on canvas cm. 80x90 by Massimo Reggiani, Italy 2007 The origins of still life can be found in Dutch painting. At the beginning of Dutch painting, artists included additional elements in their religious compositions, depicting them in a realistic and meticulous way to the point that these paintings included small still lifes inserted spontaneously into their compositions. Reggiani composed this still life inspired by the Dutch school. In the painting we observe white grapes, beautiful white flowers collected in a glass vase, a book and an ancient globe...
