About the Item

Oil on canvas 45,8 x 37,9 cm (68,3 x 60,2 cm with frame) = 18.03 × 14.92 in (26.89 × 23.70 in with frame) Signed, dated and numbered lower right Jules Bertrand Gelibert was born in Bagnères-de-Bigorre in 1834 to a painter father who had another son, Paul, six years his junior, who was also a painter. A family of painters if ever there was one, raised with a love of nature and hunting. Jules Bertrand studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Toulouse. His artistic career was marked by a few mentions and medals, but it was above all in nature that Jules Bertrand Gelibert's talent found its expression. Hunters and horns, packs of dogs and horses populate his canvases. Quails and pheasants take flight under his brush for the pleasure of observation, for the joy of being depicted. Our partridge, also known as Bartavelle, is finely painted as an observer, like an ornithological photograph. Still life or “glory” of the day, pride in the capture of a hill bird that is not easily hunted. Glory of the painter-hunter who displays his trophy and will later find literary resonance with Marcel Pagnol.
