About the Item
A very nice and colorful still life painting of flowers in vase on a table by Jules Schyl, (1893 Copenhagen - 1977 Malmö). It is signed "Schyl XXV" (1925). He was a Swedish drawing teacher, painter, graphic artist and draftsman.
Schyl studied in Stockholm at the Technical School in 1913–1914 and in 1914–1917 underwent drawing teacher training at the Higher School of Art and Design. At the same time, he studied painting at Althin's painting school. After the Stockholm period, he continued his studies with Joakim Skovgaard, Gotfred Rode and Julius Paulsen at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen 1917–1919. Schyl also made a large number of study trips during this period to, among other places, Germany, the Netherlands, France and Italy.
He was employed as a drawing teacher at Malmö city's vocational schools in 1921 and later came to work at Malmö Technical Teaching Institute for a number of years. Together with a group of other Scanian painters and sculptors, he came to participate in the breakthrough of Scandinavian modernism and he was one of the founders of the artist group De tolv in 1924 and he was one of the founders of the Art Association Aura in 1928. In the early 1920s he established a private painting school in Lund. When Schyl left Stockholm in 1917, his painting consisted of a naturalistic painting and with time in Copenhagen he came into contact with the new art trends cubism, impressionism and expressionism, but it was his own studies during the trips to Germany and France that he acquired the modernist art form.
He exhibited in Copenhagen in 1918 and together with Evald Ask and Arvid Källström at Lund University's art museum in 1923. Separately, he exhibited in 1939 and at the Malmö museum in 1944. Since 1919, he participated in collective exhibitions arranged by Skåne's art association and he participated regularly in the artist group "De tolv" from the start in 1924 and with the art group Aura he participated about 30 times. In addition, he participated in exhibitions arranged by Sweden's general art association, the Swedish Association for Visual Arts, the exhibition of Scanian art at Charlottenborg in Copenhagen in 1946, Scanian artists at Liljevalch's art gallery in Stockholm in 1951, Lhote and the Swedes at the Archive for decorative arts in Lund in 1961, and in several exhibitions of provincial art in various places in Skåne.
His art consists of figure studies, landscapes, still lifes, portraits and in many of his motifs he has drawn inspiration from the world of music and dance, dance restaurants and he often returned to harlequins and mandolin players done in oil as well as drawings, etchings, aquatint, mezzotint and lithography.
Schyl is represented at the Swedish National Museum, Lunds University Art Museum, The Modern Museum of Art, Tomelilla Art Museum, Helsingborg Museum and Malmö Art Museum.
