About the Item
A beautiful watercolor of an Iris painted by Otto Strandman (1871-1960). Signed with monogram 'OS' and dated 'Firenze 1899'. Watercolor and gouache on paper.
Otto Strandman received his education at the The College of Design and Crafts school in Gothenburg and the Royal Art Academy in Stockholm 1891–1895, and then in Germany, Italy and Paris in 1899. He won the King's Medal in 1895. In 1907 he worked as an extra teacher at the Royal Technical University in Stockholm and in 1915 he became a member of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts.
Mostly he became known as a skilled sculptor. He created reliefs, as well as many small sculptures and art-industrial objects such as electric lamps, hand mirrors, goblets and jewelry in precious metals. He has also painted in oil and watercolor, portraits, animal studies, landscapes and floral still lifes. With the knowledge as a sculptor, he could give that extra dimension to a painted surface as in the present watercolor of a beautiful Iris.
In 1914, he exhibited all his sculptures, paintings and drawings in Stockholm. His bust of Gustav II Adolf in Umeå was unveiled by Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf in 1924.
Strandman is represented in several museums, including Trelleborg Museum, Norrköping Art Museum and Västerås Art Museum, as well as in the Royal Library and the National Museum in Stockholm.
Iris in mythology:
In Greek mythology, Iris is the messenger of the gods and the goddess of the rainbow, according to Hesiod. The name Iris means rainbow.
Iris was the daughter of Thaumas and Elektra, and sister of the Harpies. She then became Hera's adopted daughter and messenger.
Iris, with her colors, is the personification of the rainbow and the symbol of the union between Uranos and Gaia. She is depicted as a winged divinity clothed in a sheer veil and is in Hera's service as a messenger to carry messages or the goddess's commands. Iris was also the one who made sure there was enough water in the clouds for it to rain.
She is also known as one of the goddesses of the sea and the sky. Iris links the gods to humanity. She travels with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other and into the depths of the sea and the underworld.
