About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Karl Larsen' (Danish, 1897-1977) and dated 1968. A substantial and vibrant Post-Impressionist oil still-life by this well-listed Danish modernist, winner of the Academy Fellowship and founding member of 'The Four' whose work is held in the permanent collection of both Denmark's National Gallery and National Museum of Art. From 1917, Karl Larsen exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris and, later, at Maison Watteau. He was also a frequent exhibitor in Denmark, including at the Charlottenborg Spring Exhibitions in Copenhagen. With the help of scholarships, (Stoltenberg 1921; Zach Jacobsen 1924), Larsen remained in Paris studying and painting from 1923-27. In 1926, he received the Academy Fellowship and, in 1929, the Vilhelm Pacht studio apartment for life which subsequently enabled him to paint without concern for public approval. In his later years, Larsen was sought after as a portrait painter. He also mastered and taught other media including sculpture, graphics, marquetry, mosaic and stained glass. His name is strongly linked with 'The Four', the avant-garde group that represented the cutting-edge of early Modernism in 1920's Denmark. Karl Larsen is listed in Benezit and his work is held in the permanent collections of numerous museums including the National Museum of Art, The Museum of Art and Design and the National Gallery in Oslo. We are pleased to offer a large and lyrical, late-period work by this notable European Modernist.
