About the Item

Original oil on panel painting of a still life of Japanese anemones by the very well known Irish artist, Martin Mooney. Signed with artist monogram signature lower right. Titled, signed and dated verso by the artist. Condition is excellent. Overall framed measurements are 16 by 13.5inches. Provenance: A New York collector. Biographical Essay: Martin Mooney (b. 1960) is an acclaimed Irish artist, widely regarded as one of his generation's most accomplished fine art painters. Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, Mooney received a rigorous classical training, studying at the University of Ulster Faculty of Art and Design, Brighton Polytechnic College of Art and Design, and the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art in London, where he completed his Master's in Fine Art painting. Mooney's work is characterized by exceptional technical ability, often drawing inspiration from traditional art and the Old Masters, yet imbued with a distinctive contemporary sensibility. He is known for building up his paintings using glazed layers, frequently bathed in a warm, golden hue, creating a rich depth and luminosity. While his oeuvre includes architectural cityscapes and vast landscapes, particularly those inspired by his current base in rural Donegal and his travels, Mooney is also a master of still life. His still life paintings, like "Japanese Anemone Study" (2017), showcase his meticulous attention to detail and his ability to infuse everyday objects and flora with a sense of intimacy and timeless beauty. Throughout his career, Mooney has garnered numerous awards, including the Richard Ford Award from the Royal Academy and the George Campbell Memorial Grant. His work has been exhibited extensively in solo and group exhibitions across Dublin, London, Toronto, New York, Barcelona, and more, and is held in significant private and public collections worldwide, including those of HRH The Prince of Wales, the Government Art Collection, the Ulster Museum, and Harvard University.
