About the Item

"The chief difficulty Alice found at first was in managing her flamingo: she succeeded in getting its body tucked away, comfortably enough, under her arm, with its legs hanging down, but generally, just as she had got its neck straightened out, and was going to give the hedgehog a blow with its head, it would twist itself round and look up in her face, with such a puzzled expression that she could not help bursting out laughing... Alice soon came to the conclusion that it was a very difficult game indeed" - Lewis Carroll 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' ch. VIII Matthew Cook A Very Difficult Game Indeed Oil & Acrylic on Aluminum 8h x 17w in 12.5h x 21.5w x 1.25d inches (framed) 20.32h x 43.18w cm MLC012 Bio: Matthew Cook is a realist painter, born in Toledo, Ohio. Best known for his highly detailed portraits and still life paintings, he creates work that show his take on historical and traditional painting subjects and themes through a contemporary lens. Cook received his B.F.A. in Art Education (2013) and his M.F.A. in Painting (2017) from Bowling Green State University and has shown his work throughout the United States. Statement: I have always loved paintings that are about people; about who they are, their struggles and triumphs, and their relationships. Whether the subjects are real or fictional, their stories are always fascinating to me. Inspired by works of the Dutch Masters, French Academic painters, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, my paintings tell the stories of people with a highly detailed naturalistic approach. My paintings are crafted using an underpainting that consists of the color complements of the painting subjects, then consecutive layers of transparent and semi-transparent glazes of color. The process is a slightly modified version to that of realist painters throughout history. In addition to their process my work also calls back to the subjects and themes used by historic realist painters to create my own interpretations of religious painting, commissioned portraiture and depictions of classic literary works. The Misunderstanding - Still Life with Honey Bee on Edge of Crystal Decanter
By Matthew Cook
Located in Chicago, IL
While still life painting can be dated back to the Ancient Egyptians, this still life takes on a modern theme. A crystal decanter and whiskey glass are set upon a piece of fraying tapestry. The curiosity comes when the viewer takes a closer look to discover a bee has flown in and is perched precariously on the neck of the decanter. This piece is framed in a heavy wooden frame with a gold insert. The framed dimensions are H 14.5 x W 16.5 inches. Matthew Cook...

Something I could easily apply, stage, and manipulate as a diary. My work consists of small-scale highly detailed landscape paintings. They are inspired by the comfort, trepidation, and beauty found in the mundane Chicago Suburbs. I combine nature, decorative house wares...

Dessert - Still Life Table Setting with Fruit, Wine and Flowers, Oil on Panel
By John Hrehov
Located in Chicago, IL
The artist is a master at storytelling. He sets the stage for the viewer to bring the events to a particular scene. Here, the artist has set two wine glasses, napkins and a small plate of desserts on a geometrically patterned table cloth, draping so it almost appears to be falling over the frame. The viewer is required to ask the questions about the scene but the answers may only lie in their own imagination. The painting, which is painted on canvas then mounted to a panel, is framed in a simple wooden frame measuring 21 x 30 inches. "Everyone's Favorite Game, " Oil painting
By Kelly Birkenruth
Located in Denver, CO
Kelly Birkenruth's oil painting "Everyone's Favorite Game" depicts a rock, paper, and scissors. About the artist: Kelly Birkenruth’s captivating paintings are in the style of contemporary realism while staying firmly grounded in the tradition of the Old Masters. She is able to pull the viewer into her paintings by interweaving emotion with a humanistic quality through her supreme handling of light. Through her portraits and still lifes she is able to evoke sensitivity and empathy, which in turn allows her to create images which transcend mere representation to capture the true essence of her subject. Kelly’s arresting compositions, draftsmanship, use of color and observation of detail allow her to create paintings with a timeless quality. After earning her degree from Pennsylvania State University, Kelly moved to southern California where she began a career as a fashion model. Her agency soon sent her abroad to Paris and Tokyo, where she spent the next several years modeling. When she wasn’t walking the runway, she spent endless hours in the great museums of the world, closely observing and studying the works of the Old Masters. “My time abroad, particularly in Paris, opened my eyes to the vast beauty and power of a great painting. After that I knew I wanted to dedicate my life to the pursuit of Fine Art” said Birkenruth. After returning to the States, Kelly studied at Otis College of Art in Los Angeles, CA. She then continued her studies through workshops and private study with renowned artists such as Daniel Sprick, Steven Assael and Jesus Emmanuel Villarreal. In the spring of 2019 Kelly...
