About the Item

Labyrinth by McKenzie West is a striking oil painting that explores the interplay between history, identity, and reflection. Rendered with meticulous realism, the work depicts an ornate vintage hand mirror, its intricate repoussé patterns evoking the elegance of a bygone era. The aged patina on the silver surface suggests both use and memory—an invitation to consider the ways in which objects can hold personal and cultural histories. Part of West’s ongoing exploration of still life and material symbolism, Labyrinth transforms a familiar object into a meditative portrait of time and self-perception. The mirror’s central void seems to simultaneously absorb and reflect, hinting at layers of narrative hidden beneath its polished surface. Framed in simplicity to emphasize the object’s sculptural presence, Labyrinth brings both refinement and quiet introspection to contemporary interiors, ideal for collectors drawn to conceptual realism and timeless craftsmanship.

#440
By Tiffany Calvert
Located in New Orleans, LA
Calvert’s current paintings investigate the relationship between digital media and the reception and perception of images, and utilizes diverse technologies such as fresco, 3D modeling, AI and data manipulation through code. She is especially interested in the evolution of pictorial space. Today we view our screens and the world they occupy as a shallowly layered space of overlapping desktop windows. The picture plane has tilted up again from the flatbed to float in front of our eyes. Calvert’s paintings in turn depict an intermediate space, where the verticality of the still life paintings cohabitate with these digital panes. Dutch floral still life paintings encapsulate multiple concerns. Their subjects were botanical fantasies, emblems of an economic mirage that has contemporary corollaries. Most important to Calvert’s pictorial concerns, they depict ephemeral things in shallow and diagrammatic space - they are all foreground. They contain an abundance of visual information in overwhelming density, creating an allover resolution; a visual field that is equivalent to digital noise. By making painterly interventions into reproductions, Calvert attempts to dissolve the layer between the resolution of the source image and abstraction of the painted mark. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ Tiffany Calvert has exhibited her work in the US and abroad including Lawrimore Project in Seattle, E.TAY Gallery in New York, the Speed Museum in Louisville and Cadogan Contemporary in London. Residencies include the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, I-Park, and ArtOmi International Arts Center where she received a Geraldine R. Dodge Fellowship. Calvert has received grants from the Great Meadows Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Her work was recently profiled by critic John Yau in the online journal Hyperallergic. Her curatorial projects include “Some Abstraction Occurs” at 65GRAND Gallery in Chicago and “Magic” at Mercer College (featuring work by Chris Martin, Karla Knight, and Sarah Peters...

By Fides Becker

'Schlüsselloch' by Fides Becker Acrylic and Eggtempera on Canvas, 33 x 54 cm, 2017 The leading theme of the artist’s interventions is the staging of temporality, transience, and change. Fides Becker (* 1962) developed and pursued her picturesque strategies in the illusionistic pictorial space. Her practice explores intimate worlds through objects and materials we associate with the private sphere in everyday life. Sofas, beds, curtains, mirrors, and sheets are reconstituted in her paintings as fragments, details or dissolving surfaces that engage with the ambiguities between presence and absence, past and present, and personal and collective images. Fides Becker (*1962 in Worms) studied at the Städel School in Frankfurt a.M., at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam, and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Her works can be found in numerous national and international collections, such as the National Collection of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Art Collection of the German Bank...
