About the Item
"June Chorus" is an original piece by Megan Rea made from oil on hand crafted paper. This pieces measures 43.25"h x 33.5"w, is signed by the artist and comes with a signed Certificate of Authenticity.
After graduating from the Edinburgh College of Art, Rea received a scholarship to study in Florence. During her time there, her focus shifted from the external features of medieval architecture to the 13th-15th century Italian frescoes adorning church walls. Rea also takes inspiration from paintings made in the Middle Ages as well as gothic design; collisions between the imaginary and the reliquary suggest a rediscovery of a life once lived, or perhaps one yet to be.
During the pandemic when access to art supplies became limited, Rea began working on homemade blended paper, whose malleability, freedom of the form, flexibility, and the array of densities and sizes created exciting opportunities for her work. By shaping the paper from pulp, Rea is able to experiment with irregular forms, giving the paintings the appearance of a preserved ruin. The irregular perimeter of the paintings holds qualities of an eroding exterior and further plays with the idea of synthetic time. The paper surface is pocked, allowing gems of paint from early washes to be caught and shine through the layers applied. Symmetry and multiples are the focus of new paintings, using narratives from Italian Saints as the inspiration for painted stone structures.

Megan Rea (b. 1993) creates work inspired by 13th-15th century Italian frescoes following time spent in Florence on a scholarship. Taking inspiration from paintings made in the Middle Ages and Gothic architecture, collisions between the imaginary and the reliquary suggest a rediscovery of a life lived. Shaping the paper by hand, her paintings imitate the passing of time and reflect the weathering of an old fresco-ed wall. The pocked surface allows gems of paint from early washes to be visible after subsequent layers build up. The irregular perimeter of her paintings holds qualities of an eroding exterior and further plays with the idea of synthetic time. Since graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2016 (BA Painting), Megan has exhibited internationally in London, New York and St Tropez, with highlights including RSA New Contemporaries (2017), Cool Fresh Sweet Waters alongside Becky Tucker and Nina Silverberg at The Tub, London (2022), and winning The Morrison Foerster (London) Art Prize 2023.

Nest, Highly Detailed Surreal Botanical, Watercolor & Gouache on Paper, Framed
By Christina Haglid
Located in Chicago, IL
This surreal landscape comes from the inner sanctum of artist Christina Haglid. Two paper orbs combine and reveal a portal to another dimension. The artist invites the viewer to take a closer look at nature, to question what is seen and to enter into a newly created world. Meticulous in her execution, Haglid uses watercolor as one might use a colored pencil. Layer upon layer of color is added to achieve this impressively detailed painting. The piece is matted and framed in a simple white frame measuring 20.25 x 16.75.

There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences.
At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. A boat nearly filled to the brim, but not submerged and able to drain its own contents carefully. A slide alone at night...
