About the Item
Mr. Brainwash Campbell’s , 2009 takes the world-famous image of Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup cans and transforms it into an equally iconic, eye-catching, and surprising object: a paint spray can, a staple of graffiti artists, adorned in a Campbell soup can label. The word SOUP on the label is replaced with the word SPRAY, a tongue-in-cheek appropriation of the Warholian object which itself was an artistic appropriation of consumerism. In this work, the artist creates nearly countless facsimiles of this spray can and allows them to occupy the entirety of the composition in a fantastic array. Above the spray cans, Mr. Brainwash adds colorful embellishments which reveal an abstract and painterly instinct. Though modest in size, this incredible work is overflowing with cultural and artistic references, all done in a bright, quick and playful style that is the hallmark of Mr. Brainwash’s oeuvre.
Created in 2009, Mr. Brainwash Campbell’s is hand-signed by Mr. Brainwash (Garges-lès-Gonesse 1966 -) in the lower left image and signed and dated “Life is Wonderful; Mr. Brainwash; ‘09” with the registration number RB697445 on the reverse. This is a unique and original work.

Mr Brainwash
For more than a decade, Thierry Guetta, under his moniker, Mr. Brainwash, has been pushing the envelope of contemporary art. The orchestrated collision of street art and pop art has been his balancing act. The tipping point for Mr. Brainwash was his groundbreaking footage from the widely-acclaimed documentary, Exit Through the Gift Shop. This Academy-nominated film demonstrates the evolution of the street art movement with Mr. Brainwash, who, alongside Banksy, brings the art to the
masses. Mr. Brainwash rocked the art world with his innovative and fearless style. He uses elements from pop art’s past and the raw components of his street art beginnings to create larger-than-life exhibitions and collaborations. Mr. Brainwash’s imaginative construction of gallery exhibitions and art shows throughout the world has continued to attract the attention of critics and celebrities alike. Navigating between worlds of film, celebrity culture, music, and sports, Mr. Brainwash has designed album covers for Madonna, Rick Ross, and KYGO. His artwork was featured in films and television
productions such as Molly’s Game, Billions, Shameless, and the Kardashians. Mr. Brainwash’s talents are showcased in creative partnerships with powerhouse brands like Hublot, Coca Cola, and Marvel Comics creator Stan Lee. He also collaborated with world known soccer player Pelé, who joined the artist in splattering paint on select artwork. While undertaking worldwide solo exhibitions and residency at Art Basel each year, Mr.
Brainwash creates opportunities to engage the public in the world of art. To that end, Mr.
Brainwash has traveled across the globe for speaking engagements and seminars including addresses at UCLA, Columbia University and Semi Permanent, Australia’s largest creative conference. Mr. Brainwash’s passion extends his commitment to giving back to the community. He continues to donate artwork in support of the Los Angeles LGBT center, created commemorative 9/11 murals to honor the victims, and partnered with Product RED to raise AIDS awareness. Mr. Brainwash also lends his yearly support to organizations such as the Prince’s Trust for the benefit of vulnerable youth. He met with former First Lady Michelle Obama in support of her organization, “Let Girls Learn” that helps
adolescent girls attend and complete school. He was also honored to meet privately with Pope Francis in Rome to raise funds for Scholas, the Pope’s personal foundation to serve the youth of the world. Mr. Brainwash continues his journey and “Time Will Tell”.

View AllThen Came a Stick and Beat the Dog, 1984
By Frank Stella
Located in Palo Alto, CA
Then Came a Stick and Beat the Dog, 1984 is a stellar example of his use of incredibly bright colors and a plethora of irregular shapes. The first thing you notice about this piece besides its colossal size is the color palette. The colors are highly saturated and vibrant; they carry a certain narrative, heavy quality that speaks to you. To name a few, Stella uses electrifying colors of magenta, pink, silver, brown, green, lavender, and aquamarine. These hues dazzle in plain sight but also accentuate the disorderly shapes of cones and cylinders. The outlines of these forms spill over the edge of the paper while the magical swirls of lines occupy your vision. The diversity in texture and layering of color on top of each other heightens the sense of mass and weight incorporated into this work.
The rhythmic lines and experimental quality of irregular shapes compose a kind of poetic allure. Inspired by gouaches done by the Russian avant-garde artist, El Lissitsky, Stella takes on a fresh new rendition. El Lissitzky’s works that Stella had seen in Tel Aviv were based on a song called “Had Gadya.” Stella designated titles for each variant in the series that becomes very much a part of his style as an artist. This piece is an example that highlights Stella as an artist who fuses inspiration from his well-traveled life into an aesthetically and culturally pleasing work of art. In all of this work’s interwoven structures, layered colors, and historic background, lies the mastery of Frank Stella, as a distinct artist in his ability to combine a vast array of elements.
Created in 1984, Then Came a Stick and Beat the Dog, 1984 from Illustrations After El Lissitzky's Had Gadya is a hand-coloring and collage with lithograph, linocut, and silkscreen on T. H. Saunders paper (background) and shaped, hand-cut Somerset paper (collage). Hand-signed and dated by Frank Stella (Massachusetts, 1936 - ) in pencil in the lower left: ‘F. Stella ‘84’, this work is numbered from the edition of 60 in pencil in the left; published by Waddington Graphics, London.
