About the Item

We often hear that beauty will save the world. But in truth, it can only save those who are able to see it. In reality, beauty itself needs strength and protection — for it is often the brightest target for violence, envy, and the urge to destroy. In this painting, the gas cylinder symbolizes the power of protection, not aggression. In a world where humanistic values are not universally shared, strength and safety become the very foundation of beauty’s existential survival. ROMANTICIZATION SERIES The "Romanticization" series is an artistic call to rediscover harmony and love in your own life by shifting your focus. Sometimes circumstances unfold beyond our control, leaving us powerless to change their course. Yet life is unique and unrepeatable, and every moment deserves to be filled with meaning and joy. Romanticizing the everyday is a practice that helps cultivate inner peace, notice small pleasures, and appreciate the uniqueness of each moment. It brings a new sparkle to our daily lives, adorns them with warmth and tenderness, and invites us to embrace the present with love and gratitude. 'Schlüsselloch' by Fides Becker Acrylic and Eggtempera on Canvas, 33 x 54 cm, 2017 The leading theme of the artist’s interventions is the staging of temporality, transience, and change. Fides Becker (* 1962) developed and pursued her picturesque strategies in the illusionistic pictorial space. Her practice explores intimate worlds through objects and materials we associate with the private sphere in everyday life. Sofas, beds, curtains, mirrors, and sheets are reconstituted in her paintings as fragments, details or dissolving surfaces that engage with the ambiguities between presence and absence, past and present, and personal and collective images. Fides Becker (*1962 in Worms) studied at the Städel School in Frankfurt a.M., at the Academie van Beeldende Kunsten in Rotterdam, and at the Hochschule der Künste in Berlin. Her works can be found in numerous national and international collections, such as the National Collection of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Art Collection of the German Bank...

#452
By Tiffany Calvert
Located in New Orleans, LA
Calvert’s current paintings investigate the relationship between digital media and the reception and perception of images, and utilizes diverse technologies such as fresco, 3D modeling, AI and data manipulation through code. She is especially interested in the evolution of pictorial space. Today we view our screens and the world they occupy as a shallowly layered space of overlapping desktop windows. The picture plane has tilted up again from the flatbed to float in front of our eyes. Calvert’s paintings in turn depict an intermediate space, where the verticality of the still life paintings cohabitate with these digital panes. Dutch floral still life paintings encapsulate multiple concerns. Their subjects were botanical fantasies, emblems of an economic mirage that has contemporary corollaries. Most important to Calvert’s pictorial concerns, they depict ephemeral things in shallow and diagrammatic space - they are all foreground. They contain an abundance of visual information in overwhelming density, creating an allover resolution; a visual field that is equivalent to digital noise. By making painterly interventions into reproductions, Calvert attempts to dissolve the layer between the resolution of the source image and abstraction of the painted mark. ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ Tiffany Calvert has exhibited her work in the US and abroad including Lawrimore Project in Seattle, E.TAY Gallery in New York, the Speed Museum in Louisville and Cadogan Contemporary in London. Residencies include the Djerassi Resident Artists Program, I-Park, and ArtOmi International Arts Center where she received a Geraldine R. Dodge Fellowship. Calvert has received grants from the Great Meadows Foundation and the Pollock-Krasner Foundation. Her work was recently profiled by critic John Yau in the online journal Hyperallergic. Her curatorial projects include “Some Abstraction Occurs” at 65GRAND Gallery in Chicago and “Magic” at Mercer College (featuring work by Chris Martin, Karla Knight...
