About the Item
This exquisite painting by renowned Victorian English artist Oliver Clare beautifully captures a vibrant still life of fruit on a mossy bank. The composition is a testament to Clare's meticulous attention to detail and masterful use of color, bringing the delicate fruits to life with remarkable realism.
The fruits are nestled against a lush, mossy bank, which Clare has depicted with rich, earthy tones and intricate brushwork, creating a textured backdrop that complements the softness of the blossoms. This natural setting evokes a sense of tranquility and timeless beauty, characteristic of Clare's work.
The painting is elegantly framed in an ornate, gilded Victorian frame, featuring intricate carvings that enhance its historical and aesthetic value. This frame not only serves to protect the artwork but also accentuates its classical charm, making it a stunning centerpiece suitable for any collection.
Overall, this painting is a remarkable example of Oliver Clare's skill in botanical still life, offering viewers a glimpse into the delicate and enchanting world of Victorian floral art.

Oliver Clare
Oliver Clare was born in 1853, to the renowned still-life artist George Clare. The Clare family members were Victorian artists who specialized in, and were well known for their highly finished and precisely detailed still life and flower paintings. Oliver spent most of his artistic life in Birmingham. Though there are no records indicating where he received his training, one can be quite certain that most, if not all, of it was from his father. Their stippling technique and choice of subject matter are almost identical. While Oliver lived in Birmingham he was commissioned by a local health firm "Health Food Stores" to paint still-lives to be reproduced on postcards and posters. Clare exhibited many paintings throughout his lifetime and is most often associated with the Artists of the West Midlands and the North. He exhibited: eighteen works at the Royal Society of Artists, Birmingham; three at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and six at the Manchester City Art Gallery. Throughout the late 1870's and early 1880's he lived in London where he exhibited several works there at the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street.

19th century English oil of still life of fruit, German Stein with silver lid
By CHARLES THOMAS BALE
Located in Woodbury, CT
Outstanding English 19th century still life of fruit, a German Stein with silver top in an interior.
Charles Thomas Bale was born in Soho, London in 1849, the son of Thomas Bale, a basket maker. His older brother Thomas Charles Bale (1831-1899) was an artist and picture restorer. He lived with his family in St James, Westminster and although little is known about his education, he would have undoubtedly received encouragement and drawing tuition from his brother. Bale started exhibiting in 1866 at the Institute of British Artists, Suffolk Street. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1872, the same year he married Caroline Leathem. Together, they spent their married life in St Pancras. He specialized in still life paintings predominantly of fruit, but he frequently incorporated baskets, a homage to his family’s profession, as well as pottery, glass, and game. Bale’s work was influenced by the English still-life artists George Lance and William Duffield...
