About the Item

This piece, "Apples and Crystal", by artist Ora Sorensen is a 30x30 fruit oil painting on canvas featuring a bowl of crisp green apples in a crystal dish, surrounded by white cloth that makes up the background. Light reflects through the crystal dish and onto the fruit. About the artist: Sorensen describes her work as “exaggerated realism”, where the colors, scale, contrast and lighting are pushed just beyond reality. Her popular still lifes evoke the beauty of nature, and then heighten it with vibrant colors, brilliant light and dancing shadows. Their sensuality draws you in, making the viewer want to breathe in the sweet aroma of the luminous flowers or bite into a luscious pear. Ora’s laborious method of oil painting uses many layers of thin transparent oil paint to give a deep jewel like glow to the surfaces of the painting’s subject matter. Sorensen was born in New York but grew up overseas in such countries as Libya, Turkey, Iran, Holland and Thailand. Throughout her travels, Ora spent a lot of time drawing and painting as a child, taking workshops from artists all over the world. Ora owned an art gallery in Delray Beach, Florida for twenty years, and her paintings have been shown in many exhibitions over the past decades. Sorensen currently lives and paints in North Carolina. Ora’s latest projects include a commission for the Cleveland Clinic in Naples, Florida as well as five commissioned paintings for the lobby of the new Intercontinental Hotel in Cleveland, Ohio. Ora has been a contributing columnist to THE PROFESSIONAL ARTIST MAGAZINE and THE ARTIST’S MAGAZINE.

Sean Farrell, "Lit Up Life", 12x9 Red Cherry Fruit Still Life Oil Painting
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
"Lit Up Life", is a 12x9 oil painting on board by artist Sean Farrell. Featured is an arrangement of freshly picked red cherries overflowing a polished gold metal bowl. The graceful direction of the cherry stems create movement and flow in this harmonious piece. Strong shadows cast onto the linen cloth underneath. Rich tones of orange and reds contrast the green stems. About the artist: “As I paint at my easel each day in the studio, I approach creating art with the idea of continually developing my artistic understanding and enhancing my personal expression,” writes Sean Farrell of his philosophy of life as an artist. Farrell, who grew up in a small town where there were few opportunities for formal art education, began drawing on his own at a young age and through intense study of the great artists he found in library books began to nurture his innate talent. He writes of his younger years, “Looking at great paintings always excited me and by visiting museums [and] studying numerous art books…I gradually began to increase my artistic understanding,” which led Farrell to teach himself to paint with oils in the late 1980’s and then eventually to attend a painting workshop in New Mexico in the early 1990’s where he met numerous professional artists, who inspired him to a full-time artistic career. Internationally, the prestigious Florence Biennale invited the artist to participate and exhibit work in Florence, Italy. NYARTS Magazine covered the exhibition and in their published review gave the following praise to the works of Sean Farrell… “Works deserving special attention was Sean Farrell’s exquisitely painted flower and fruit arrangements. Eye-catching with his use of dramatically bold colors mixed with delicate detail in a very modern old-master style.” Choosing to travel extensively throughout Italy and also to other regions of Europe over attending art school, the artist has studied and learned from the great master works in the history of art. His paintings reveal his affection for the 17th century Italian and Dutch painters while still remaining truly unique. Mr. Farrell’s works are distinctive for their elegant and graceful compositions, his rich jewel like color, and an elevated sensitivity to the beautiful nuances of light. His works reveal a master’s touch and a quiet ease. Sean Farrell is internationally recognized and a highly collected artist. He is known for his vivid and luminous oil paintings...

Apples and Glass, super real, illustionistic, colorful contemporary still life
By Douglas Newton
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil paint on canvas Doug Newton’s hyper-real paintings observe reality, explore translucency, reflections and luminosity, and dazzle the viewer with all the ways light can transform our perceptions. His subject matter concentrates on still lives of food, toys, candy and household objects. In addition to many group shows across the country, Mr. Newton’s show, “HARD CANDY and other confections” represents his fifth solo exhibition. His paintings have been collected in numerous private collections. Mr. Newton resides in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Sonia Coman writes in her essay, Doug Newton’s hard candy: the confection of painting Doug Newton’s paintings are about… painting. The hyperrealist technique of trompe l’oeil or “trick the eye” is knowingly playful. It simultaneously calls attention to the illusion of a different material—for example, translucent candy wrappers—and the reality of the layers of paint, masterfully applied to the canvas. In that, Newton’s paintings pay homage to an esteemed series of trompe l’oeil masters, from Inquisition-era Spanish painter Francisco de Zurbarán to Gilded-Age American painter William Michael Harnett...
