About the Item

Victory (The Thin Ice Skater) by Pam Burnley-Schol is an oil painting on gold leaf, depicting a pair of ice skates and an icy bird's nest against a dark, starry sky, with floating feathers. Oil paint and 23k gold leaf on panel 48 x 48 x 2 in. Frame size: 49.5 x 49.5 x 2.75 in. Signed, titled and dated on verso From her series, Nested Memory Artist Statement: "People often ask, ‘why gold?’, when they see my work. I began using 23k gold leaf on my paintings in a very limited, decorative manner in the early 2000s. By 2005, I was employing the gold for entirely different reasons, and by covering the entire substrate with 23k gold leaf, my use of gold had begun to contribute to content as well as composition. When I use gold as a background, or a banded reference to proscenium, the scale of its presence allows the gold to simultaneously convey all of the paradox that is gold. Gold is a fundamental element of the universe, listed on the periodic table of elements as Au. Its atomic number is 79, meaning each atom of gold has 79 protons in its nucleus. It is unique in all the known universe. However, while it's chemical presence is singular and finite, it's potential for meaning and content is both vast and contradictory. It is a mineral – solid, weighty, and of the Earth; yet it is luminous and shimmers with a sublime glow. And while it radiates from the pages of medieval manuscripts, symbolizing the light of God, it also lies, hidden in the dark vaults at Fort Knox, embodying material wealth. It is my goal to exploit this duality. In my mind, these images are secular icons that express my understanding that the world is an elegant blend of the corporal and the ethereal. I FIND INSPIRATION IN THE MYSTERY OF FAITH, DREAMS, AND THE NATURAL WORLD. "

Ice Floe, Abstract Painting

Artist Comments
With a harmonious flow of color and form, artist Sheila Grabarsky offers an expression of spring colors in the garden. Layers of red, pink, yellow and green curve together in a profusion of new growth. "This painting was done intuitively and evolved via interspersed layering until a cohesive composition was defined," says Sheila.

About the Artist
Sheila Grabarsky is known for her bold, gestural nature scenes. Her fluid paintings have been compared to those of Vasily Kandinsky, the Russian painter and art theorist referred to as the father of abstraction. And, like Kandinsky, the essence of inner beauty and the potency of the human spirit are key factors in her art. Sheila's art carries an air of spontaneity, however, the work develops in many layers and takes a long time to come together. "I search for evolving forms within the composition, look for 'eye flow' and use my color intuition," she explains. "This is the mystery I love about abstraction - always evolving and birthing itself." Sheila draws energy and inspiration from living near water, and says she rarely travels because she does not like to be away from painting. In her studio, she is usually accompanied by three animal friends and an eclectic playlist of Janis Joplin, blues, reggae and classical. In 2016, Sheila's art was featured in the movie American Pastoral, starring Ewan McGregor and Dakota Fanning.
