About the Item
Patrick Nevins’ Cobalt is a masterfully executed trompe-l'œil oil painting on board, measuring 6 x 6 inches (15.24 x 15.24 cm) and presented in a complementary 8.25 x 8.25-inch frame. This 2025 work exemplifies Nevins’ signature hyperrealistic approach, where meticulous detail and illusionistic depth bring everyday objects to life.
In Cobalt, Nevins explores the interplay between materiality and perception, featuring a striking red and black horseshoe magnet seemingly affixed to the surface, casting an uncanny shadow over the elemental symbol for cobalt ("Co") and its atomic weight (58.93). The painting plays with dimension and texture, challenging the viewer’s understanding of space and realism.
Executed in oil on board, this piece showcases Nevins' technical mastery in creating hyperreal shadows and tactile surfaces, a hallmark of his trompe-l'œil compositions. A refined addition to any collection, Cobalt is a testament to the artist’s ability to blend scientific symbolism with captivating realism.
About the artist:
Born and raised in Townsend, Massachusetts, Patrick has been drawing and sketching as far back as he can remember. Although always interested in art, it wasn't until after service in the Marine Corps that he enrolled at the College of Charleston with a focus on studio art and painting.
Initially drawn to the beauty of the female form, Patrick has been refining his art and playing with different subject matter but always striving for realism. In recent years, he has found a real interest in still life and the genre of Trompe' l'oeil.
