About the Item
Work on canvas
Golden wooden frame
46 x 54 x 8 cm
This artwork features a vibrant, textured composition that immediately catches the eye with its bold use of colors and shapes. We discover a stylized bird, predominant in the center, whose vibrant feathers mix deep reds and bright shades. This bird rests delicately on a circular surface, evoking stability despite its dynamic appearance. The background of the work is a swirl of varied greens, creating a striking contrast with the warm colors of the bird, and suggesting an atmosphere that is both peaceful and energetic. The artist used visible brushstrokes, giving the whole a rich and lively texture which reinforces the sensation of movement. Accessory elements, such as fragments of fabric with colorful patterns, add a dimension of mystery and personal interpretation. Every detail seems to tell a story, incorporating contrasts of geometric and organic shapes that enrich the depth of the work. This painting is distinguished by its audacity and inventiveness, inviting the viewer to plunge into a dreamlike universe where color and form lead a harmonious dance. It is a celebration of color and creativity that testifies to the talent and singular vision of the artist.

Paul Mathey
Paul Albert Mathey is the son of Charles and Elisa Beaujon. Orphaned at 14, he was taken in by an uncle and spent his childhood in New York. In 1931, he married Claire-Lise Monnier, a painter like him. They have exhibited together several times. Between 1905 and 1910, he took evening classes at the Art Student's League in New York. From 1910 to 1916, he attended the School of Fine Arts in Geneva and was a pupil of Barthélemy Menn. During this period, he received several awards and mentions. In 1916-1917, he worked with Ferdinand Hodler. In 1918, he became a member of the Society of Swiss Painters, Sculptors and Architects (he participated in all of its exhibitions until 1967) and of the Gottfried Keller Foundation (1954-1961). He mainly painted landscapes and still lifes. He also made some theater sets in Geneva. In 1967, he became a Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters. A large part of his works can be found at the Monnier Foundation in Cartigny.
