About the Item
Pink Peonies, artist signed.
Peggi Blizard is an American artist best known for her meditative realist paintings of interiors and still life's. Drawing on the techniques of Dutch Realism, Blizard captures the emotional significance of everyday objects and spaces. Peggie Blizard was born in Rockingham, North Carolina in 1942. After receiving her BFA from East Carolina University, she moved to New York where she continued her education at the Art Students League and Pratt Graphic Arts Center (now the Pratt Institute), and later received her Master's degree from City College. Blizard's work has been exhibited at the Hammond Museum, North Salem, NY; the Parrish Art Museum Southampton, NY; the Boston Museum of Fine Art; Hopper House, Nyack, NY; the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh; the Norfolk Museum of Fine Arts, VA; and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Richmond.
Artist statement:
Realism as a style has remained unchanged since the Renaissance. Realism as a technique, however, has been altered and heavily influenced by technology. Most artists have given up “eyeballing” a subject as a drawing technique and have come to rely on photographs instead. Turnaround time for pictures is now virtually instant because of digital cameras and computers. Photoshop can actually “paint” a picture for you. Artists have always used the tools at hand and of their time …. Camera obscura, compass, protractor, calipers, rulers, etc. The challenge has always been and still is the same: How do you make a work of art and not just an artwork? How do you infuse poetry into what you are doing and give the work meaning and beauty? One of the things I try to achieve in my work is the creation of a feeling of three dimensions through the objects I paint, whether they are flowers or boxes or old kitchen appliances. The space between the objects and the viewer is usually somewhat shallow. However, behind and around the objects, there is the illusion of great depth. An artist friend of mine once said that the purpose of painting, whether realistic or abstract, is to make a two-dimensional space appear to be three dimensional. Maybe it’s just that simple.

- Bunch of Roses, Oil on PaperBy Gustave LinoLocated in Saint Amans des cots, FROil on paper mounted on cardboard by Gustave Lino (1893-1961), France, 1950s. Bunch of Roses. Measurements : with frame: 73.5x58.6 cm - 28.9x23.1 inches without frame: 61x46 cm - 24x18.1 inches, format 12P. Signed "Lino" (see photo). About Gustave Lino : Gustave Lino was born in Mulhouse on October 27, 1893. Adolescent, he often visits the museum of the city and is interested in painting. In 1912, at only 19 years old, he went to Marseille and discovered the particular light of Provence. Without anyone knowing why, he embarks for Algiers. In 1914, the war broke out. Lino is of German nationality. It is for this reason that he is incarcerated in Corsica at the convent of Corbara. He learns painting alongside a fellow countryman. He paints many paintings and decorates the hotel Solferino d'Ajaccio and the castle of Malaspena-Massa in Belgodère. At the end of the war, he returns to Algiers. He follows the courses of Georges Rochegrosse. Particularly talented, he exhibites in Paris in Salons and galleries, such as the Salon des Artistes French from 1926 and the Danton Gallery, rue La Boétie in 1927. To perfect his training, he then undertakes a long stay in Spain where he studies chiaroscuro. Back in Algeria, he travels the north and the great south of Algeria (Laghouat, Touggourt, El Oued among others ...). He is very interested in Albert Marquet's painting, which particularly seduces him. This clarity while transparency, this harmony of lines and tones becomes his ideal of perfection. He specializes in still lifes, Algerian landscapes and seascapes. He leaves Algiers for Bou-Saada. After the Second World War, Lino makes several trips. In Tunisia, where he is gone for a few days, he spends six months in Sidi-Bou-Saïd, crunching every corner of the city, seizing the habits of the inhabitants. He will also spend six months in the Balearic Islands and later in Mallorca. He returns to Corsica long after his internment and travels the island for several months. In 1954, he spends a few weeks in Venice and the works are the opportunity of an exhibition that is a real success. Very close to the group called "Painters of Poetic Reality" (Maurice Brianchon, Christian Caillard, Jules Cavaillès, Raymond Legueult, Roger Limouse, Roland Oudot, André Planson and Kostia Terechkovitch.), close friend of Albert Marquet (Marcelle Marquet will say from him that "he succeeded Marquet better than Marquet himself"). Also appreciative, Albert Camus said of Gustave Lino (at the Salon of Algerian artists of 1934): "His Marines, if we feel the influence of Marquet, are nonetheless true successes, sensitive, fresh and of one coming ". All this in respect of this artistic movement which, as writes E. Cazenave: "to an Orientalism dreamed artists of Algeria oppose a lived orientalism". His palette is particularly colorful, often linear, with a predilection for blues, taking as a subject all the towns and villages visited. But his creativity is not limited to landscapes, he is also an accomplished portraitist and his talent will gradually evolve from Expressionism to a more and more contemporary painting whose modernism is revealed at the end of his life. through his "Compositions". It is part of contemporary post-war Algerian painting...Category
