About the Item
"The Conversation" is an oil painting on canvas measuring 54" tall by 54" wide, and a key artwork among Peter Schenck's many remarkable paintings addressing conditions that continue to fascinate – the double-edged sword of art history that inspires as it threatens, the creative act as performance. Also the creative act as destruction and construction. In what appears to be torn fragments collaged together, various schools of art history recombine aggressively. From cubism to cartoon, from antiquity to contemporary, the artist striving to find coherence in a potentially incoherent world.
From Peter Schenck: "Thinking about passing human interaction – we all want to be understood, but often our thoughts and intentions are lost in translation. Here are two figures, two heads, that have been chopped up and discombobulated."
From Daniel Gerwin – "Schenck’s color is vibrant, wild, saturated to the point of overheating, and altogether brilliant in the balancing of hues, temperatures, shapes, and color quantities. The paintings have a remarkable coherence for their dizzying juxtaposition of so many small chromatic passages." (Essay: The Anxiety and the Ecstasy)

The artists most obviously in Schenck’s pantheon are Picasso, Philip Guston, and Peter Saul. Their patriarchal power is noteworthy in the context of the Oedipal eyeballs repeated from one painting to the next; Schenck’s work manifests the anxiety of influence, but the ecstasy as well. The fear of painting in the wake of such magnificent and terrible fathers is palpable, but no less so is Schenck’s obvious delight in adapting their discoveries to his own purposes. His works demonstrate his mastery over his idiosyncratic cartoonish language, his personal world of symbols, and his palette, which is all his own. Schenck has arrived at a place in his artistry where he gets the last laugh. - Daniel Gerwin, contributing art critic to Art Forum, The Brooklyn Rail and Hyperallergic Peter Schenck / Artist Bio: Peter Schenck (b. 1983, New York, NY) lives and paints in Brooklyn, NY. "Strengths and Weaknesses" is a portrait exploring several elements and strategies that fascinate the artist – notably the performance anxiety induced by simply being an artist, staring down the freight train of art history as it hurtles toward you every time you pick up a brush. Luck? Talent? Maybe. There are signposts and guides in this painting, of course (Cubism! Surrealism! Brancusi! Guston!), but they can clobber you too if you're not careful. Even the phrase "strengths and weaknesses" smacks of compromises and rationalization – deadly to an artist looking to construct their own integral world.
"Strengths and Weaknesses" is an acrylic and charcoal on canvas measuring 54" tall by 54" wide. It was included in the artist's solo show "Comedy Cellar" at Freight + Volume Gallery, New York City in July 2018. (See last photograph for an installation view.)
